Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I'm going to do it! We have afew wild dogwoods and I'd like to someday have LOTS of them! I'll have to eventually break down and buy a pink one though as these wild ones are all white. I'm so excited about being able to do this in the winter.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
taylor, i know its illegal there to cut dogwoods, its the states' flowering tree. its kind of like bad ju-ju!!!but i live in tn. and i want to have more dogwoods and i dont want to pay the 45 dollars for a 2 yr.old tree. i have a sacred reverance for these trees. i lived in va. most of my life( here, there, everywhere in va.) so i know the implications of that. why do you think im having such a hard time with cutting my trees. almost makes me cry to think of cutting it, but i would like to have more.
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
its not out of context what you said. your just concerned about the trees and the cutting of them. i understand 100%!!!! i love these trees they are one of the most beautiful flowing trees ive ever seen. they have simple and clean lines to them and the smell is just barely visible.so i know and i understand.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
We have a Pink and Multiple Whites.
Actually- we get whites popping up in really random places (Birds...!) and we still don't cut them down. Thinking about transplanting 2 Whites this winter....to where? Who Knows! I need to plant my Japanese Red Maple that is from seed from our big Japanese Red Maple that died 2 years ago for unknown reasons along with all of the neighbors ones....except for the lacey-leaf ones. Weird... :2781: |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
my dogwoods have only been in the ground 1 yr. so their still little about 4 ft.tall. i have re-planted and re-potted the other pot crammed full of snakeplant. i broke it down to 5 pots. now im tired.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
My 7yr old grand daughter helped me hunt for seeds this morning and before the day is done we'll have them planted in something..... We collected blue Morning Glory and Angel's Trumpet seed pods full of seeds. Both plants grow wild, like weeds here. I didn't even realize that the huge bush that sprang up by the pool last summer was anything but a pretty weed! Every evening we would watch fasinated by the moths that looked like humming birds buzz around the flowers. We left it as it was hanging over one side of the pool looking beautiful! We thought it was the prettiest weed we ever saw! LOL
If anyone wants any of these seed pods for morning glory or angel's trumpet just PM me with your address as there are a lot still on the dead plants outside. I'm assuming the seeds are ok? Deb Ok, I've just sat and did alot of reading and looking at pictures and I don't have Angel's Trumpet like I thought. I have Devil's Trumpet. It seems to be related but I think mine is more of the wild flower/weed variety! It stood up tall and leaned over the water like a canopy and was pollinated by huge moths that looked like humming birds. Flowers didn't open up until evening. I don't remember the folige having an unpleasant smell though. I copied a website for you and mine looks exactly like the pics from HarryNJ http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/26850/ |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
its not what i planted...its what i dug up. today i dug up and re-planted a clump of lambs ears that weighted about 20 lbs. a plot of iris that had almost 60 rizones in it. solomons seal(that i forgot i had planted there) one canna that i left in the ground, and some daylily tubers that i apparently missed the other day when i dug up the parent plant.:bed: :nanabath:

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Deb!! That is Datura.. It is no weed..LOL It is a cousin the the Brugmansia and a beautiful plant to grow.. There are many colors.. Dbls,Trip, yellows purples, swirls /bi-colored. and some that open only a night.. I have many Brugs but I always keep some Dat's around as well..
I potted up another handful of Brug cuttings today..and started some of the German cross seeds I have.. I am very excited to get them going? I So ready for Spring.. Kylie:pinkskirtnaner: |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Kylie I almost missed your post .... If I don't stay logged onto the forum the new posts I haven't read go away if I can't read them all at once.
Well I guess I'll let the plant stay by the pool as it really looks tropical with the huge leaves and the flowers have traces of light purple. Some of these plants I looked at online don't have as big of leaves so I do like this one... and those moths are amazing! My husband and the grandkids were saying they were humming birds and I sat quietly on the steps close to the plant to watch and it was hard to tell as it was dusk.. but I had never seen a humming bird out at night LOL I had to do a search on them online to figure out the mystery. I am so ready for spring too!! I have leaf and butter lettuce that just sprouted. Deb |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Here are two Walkers Low Catmints (Nepeta racemosa cultivar) that I planted out this morning. I bought them late last spring in 4" pots and then raised them up in 3 gallon pots. It is now January in San Diego, so they are showing some winter color from overnight lows of 35 and 40 (F). Spring through Fall they bloom incessantly if you are frugal with water. Behind them I am building a planter for a bareroot Mohawk Pecan hybernating in the garage.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I planted 2 pineapple papayas (babaco) that I rooted in pots last year from cuttings. I also planted a 3rd from a cutting taken today and coated with a little Rootone. :) No picture today, its too dark and gray outside.
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Here's those Babacos from yesterday. The one on the far left is 3 years old and bearing its second crop which will ripen in April. 2nd from left is a rooting that is too short and dark to see in the photo. The 2 on the right were rooted in pots from cuttings last spring. The farthest right is multi-trunked with three stout leaders.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
i have 2 fall glo tangerines coming up! yeah. still waiting on my lemons....
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Well....... :islandsharkbanana: I walk by the pineapples in the store and they all cringe. I'm working on my second failure I think. Didn't have any dirt and the rest of the goodies for the first one so followed step by step directions (with pictures) off the web that ended in a glass of water. I KNOW I've been taught by Logos posts NOT to root in water but it's all I had. It got slimy and the leaves went crispy. Now I have lots of stuff... garden soil, sand, peat moss, spaghum moss, perlite, that rooting powder but didn't have it in the beginning of my second one so it got slimey and the leaves started to die.. and then I scraped the slime off near the root area and put it in 50/50 spaghum moss and perlite and have it sitting next to the heat mat that has a tray on it so can't put it on the heat mat and have a full spectrum light about 10 inches over it and I'm hoping for a turn around .... but ........... we all like pineapples so I'll go buy another one soon.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Keep going Cookie - once you get the hang of it you will have pineapples coming out of your ears!!!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Instead of experimentation, it might be cheaper to buy "Plant Propagation" edited by Alan TooGood. The "national home gardening club" edition of this book is usually a lot cheaper than the DK Books edition -- and the only difference is the outside front cover.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
fall glo tangerine number 3 popped his head up out of the dirt this morning!

Thanks Richard, iam still trying to figure out what i did wrong!
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Thanks Lynn .... you sure have a nice pineapple plant! I am going to go buy a couple more. My daughter is pregnant and has been craving them anyway. I'll leave this last one in the pot for a couple weeks and see if it can pull through but don't have much hope for it. I want to get more going.
Am I supposed to watch for the existing leaves to start growing taller or am I looking for new leaves pushing through? These leaves are dead down to about a half an inch from the base. |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Deb, the leaves will start growing longer outward as new leaves start growing from the center. Remember you dont have to cut off the top, just grab ahold and snatch it off!
The top will come off clean compared to cutting it off. |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Does anyone know what the best crop to grow along side bananas is??
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
A legume with shallow roots. Clover is one example.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Today I replanted 60 little plugs of various greenhouse plants which I rooted in the last three weeks from my own cuttings. By using 1/2" to 1" cuttings I got 288 per flat of 1" pockets. I was able to place both flats on heating pads and under some suppl. lights at a south window. About 75 have rotted but that leaves me with 500 "free" plants. Now the 60 plug flat goes to the light rack upstairs in the garden/palm room where the fixtures under the top three trays also provide bottom heat. From there they can go to the unheated racks under lights in the basement light room where I store semidormant stuff that needs room temp. I can accomodate more there if I need to move them into 3" pots before spring. I might be able to find room for some in the chockful greenhouse as well.
By rooting them this early I can propagate earlier in less space and then turn them loose when it gets warmer. It's great to have new life sprouting in the dead of Ohio winter. It's headed for the upper teens tomorrow night and Sunday. The snowdrops are pushing because it was in the 50s a few days ago and a chinese witchhazel has half opened its reddish flowers. Stan |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I just made a picture of what I did Jan. 31 08. I was given some cloned orchids at the World Orchid Conference. Five red Cattleyas, 21 white Phals and 43 pink Phals. The Phals will bloom in one or two years while the Catleyas will take 4 years.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
About a hundred passionflowers; costaricensis, Lady Margaret, malformis, x belotii, alata, Blue Bonnet, gritensis, kermesina, racemosa, reflexiflora, Sunset, and serratifolia, plus 50 Clivia, some fuscia and lantanas. Over the last few days I potted up about several hundred orchids; Vandas (in baskets), Phalenopsis, Catesetums, Stanhopeas, and Cattleyas. Things are busy!
