For most countries you can send plant seeds, because most of the time they are worried about living plants or plants in soils that harbor pests and disease. But I would contact USDA and Arg. dept. for The Dominican Republic

It has been 86 degrees fahrenheit(30 celsius) overhere in holland the last 2 days. A new april record after all the warmth records we had last year.
All my bananas are moved from the greenhouse to outside and they grow
fantastic.
Now I am waiting for my licuala grandis wich I have ordered and some gingers.
Have also planted one Fuchsia, one clematis and one passiflora.

Ron, you have the same temperatures that we have! Today I planted a fruiting lime tree that I intend to graft with quite a few Meyers lemon buds. Limes are everywhere but lemons are scarce to non-existant for some mysterious reason. Also saved seed from my Meyers lemon has just started to sprout.

Ten sugarloaf pineapple starters went into the ground yesterday.

I've been wanting to try these for a while after reading about them in a few threads here, finally obtained them early this week and planted them out yesterday.

A limequat tree!

Finally found one (5gal) thanks to JoeReal's tip @ Home Depot having cold-clime bananas - our HD didn't have any, but I gots me a limequat(Eustis)! It went into a barrel like the variegated pink lemon.

Also sowed my annual requirement of bush baby lima beans (1st round, anyway!) & up-potted bell pepper seedlings. Anchos, fooled you jalapenos (I'm a chili-wuss), bells all are staying in the pots for a few more weeks.

I've been sprouting an excellent sweet potato since late fall. The sprouts went into pots, gradually bringing up the soil level till now. Today they went into their respective barrels - did I mention these were the BEST I've ever ate? Got the originals from an old truck farmer selling literally on the side of the road out of his truck! Only have room for 4 barrels, but if they turn out as hoped - I'll have to make room for more next year.

Tomatoes got put in ground (w/room for cover if it gets nippy - crazy dang weather!) from their pots. They are already hanging w/fruits, green still - but they're there! I only put in 3 types this year:
Variegated ... cuz it's just so darned pretty.
Roma ... these get dried & vacuum sealed allll summer, we use alot in the winter months.
Healthkick ... to make up for the cheesecake fetish.

All done in between breaks to get online, of course! Tomorrow I'm hoping to get the strazzberry barrels tidied up, they're already putting out berries at a rate of @ 1qrt a day. Yummm!

Almost forgot, picked up a wee little portable 5in TV to lug outside w/me. In addition to cheesecake, I'm also a news junky!

1 cashew nut tree and 1 guyaba (guava). also seed from balsa, tomatillo (tree tomato), passiflora vitifolia (hopefully with some hybrids with P. edulis), and papaya. As long as we can keep the dogs from rampaging over them with their rough play, we will be ok. I have protected most things with a cage of rebar!

I have just checked my seeds and the balsa, tomatillo and passiflora vitifolia are all sprouting - just waiting for the papaya. hooray!

Yesterday I planted in the ground a coconut palm (#4 for the yard), as well as an Attalea cohune.
The coconut I found floating in the lake behind my fathers home nearby, it must have fallen from his neighbors tree which overhangs the lake between the two properties. It was a little sprout in a very large nut. I had to roll up my pants and get my feet wet to collect it, but I've been through much worse to get my hands on plants. It has a nice orange hue in the midribs... one day I may present it for ID by the coconut experts over at the palm society.
The Cohune palm I got at a recent Palm Society sale here in S. Florida. I can't wait for it to become a goliath, it's only about 2' tall at the moment. I kept it potted up in it's pot for a couple of months before I picked the spot where I set it to reside from now on.

My entire mat of purple sugarcane fell over yesterday! When I righted it up, I got covered in black ants. They love that plant... and so do I!
Should I be topping off the taller stalks while the mat is still digging it's roots in the ground? I thought it was pretty sturdy, it held up to some crazy strong winds before this mishap... it's my first sugarcane so I'm new to it.. although it's a couple of years old, it's really started to take off the past 6 months... any tips on why it fell over? does sugarcane need to be staked or topped a few times as it starts getting massive? I did cut the tallest stalk once already.. all info appreciated, I know you have a lot of rare sugarcane, Frank... ever have that happen..? It probably got flooded with the torrential downpour (that's probably what did it) but is this a known issue with them? seems like a good way to propogate itself... all those exposed roots would then have a spot to take hold if I left it long enough..

Sorry for the late reply,just saw it!.How tall are your stalks?Usually when they get TOP heavy any wind and rain will usually blow some over.Some varieties are hardier than others.Adding a mound will increase New shoots and growth, it will not stop wind blowing them over though.Tie them up to the fence with some fishing line ect and cut down the ones on the ground.Some varieties DO NOT ratoon(come up in spring)well,so you might think about replanting some of the blown stalks.

Yesterday I dug up 5 GF's Sold 2 sent one out and potted up 2... The Thai Gold I have is puppin like crazy.. Ya'll were right..LOL I removed 3 and potted them up.. I also started some Passi seed quadrangularis, ligularis, mollissima, Panama Red, Maliformis, and sp JS.. along with Akebia quinata and trifoliate...

Prowling around a neglected corner of my favourite plant nursery, I came upon this little beauty. The plant man said they call them 'cabeza de caballo' - 'horses head' and you can see the reason why.



My best guess is that it is a form of Anthurium, but I would be very grateful if someone could either confirm this - or point me in the right direction.

This is a popular Alocasia hybrid (sanderiana x longiloba)

I'm positive that it's an alocasia. But identifying the species or clone is another thing. I gave up when experts kept changing their position.

25 key lime seeds sent to me by Steelviper - thanks Mark, they are much appreciated. So now my mini citrus grove will have Meyers improved lemon, local rough lemon and a commercial european lemon, pink grapefruit, persian lime and key lime. I also have papaya, passion fruit, guava, cashew nut and of course bananas and plantains. Which reminds me - I haven't checked up on them for the last hour!

The Mysore are doing very good. One is much stronger than the other though.
The Orinoco bloom that is opening, already has at least 20 fingers. I can't wait for the Thousand Fingers to open!

miss anna ... did you start you pineapples by the tops or did you buy the plants? the reason i ask is, i started some a few days ago from the tops and would like to know, how long did it take them to root? i would appriciate any info you could impart to me. i googled it and and it seems like everything i read contradicts each other. thank you :2221:

I did them from the tops. Whenever pineapples are on sale, I buy them for the tops. I guess that doesn't make much sense to buy the pineapple just to plant the top to get a pineapple? LOL!!!
I know there are several ways to root them, but I put mine in water for at least a week. Then into a pot. I tried one in the ground once and it didn't survive. :(

LOL Anna. No i do not have any key lime seeds,but you can buy the key limes at the supermarket and pluck them out. that is what i did. $1.19 for a small bag. And you can use the limes for the coronas;) I think a key lime tree is 25 bucks at home depot to. if you want a calamansi seedling(Philippine lime) and or a yuzu(Japanese citrus) seedling. i will give you a few when they are ready.

Oh, don't I feel not-so-smart. LOL!!!!! I really haven't looked for Key Limes in the store. I had several people tell me we can't get Key Lime trees here. :)
I would be interested in a seedling or two. And I will look for Key Limes in the store, and force myself to drink Corona to get to the seeds. :0490: :nanawhopp: :2212: :2717:

thats what i did with the pineapples. the pineapples sure were gooooood. and if you have to force yourself to drink a corona, it just wouldnt taste as good. and you shouldnt drink it w/o the lime anyway. ha ha :sumbrero:

its been 7 days since i put my pineapples in water to root. i changed the water today and i found new leaves growing inside the tops. with all this excitment over the last 2 days i dont think i can contain myself!!!:2748: this is the first time ive tried the water rooting. maybe ill have happy pineapples too. YEAH!:2221:. i think i will try mango and papya next. goodness i love fruit.
