Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Here's a Hydrofarm dome seed starting tray with 36 "Jiffy" peat pots and seed starting mix.
In the pots I planted these seeds, some in multiple pots -- Tomatoes: Striped Roman, Big Girl, Better Boy, Momotaro, Persimmon, Azoychka, Cherokee Purple, Palla di Fuoco, Green Grape, and Sun Gold. Eggplants: Ichiban, Rosa, Florida High Bush. Peppers: Pimento Elite, Long Red Cayenne, Bulgarian Carrot. Squash: 8-ball, Acorn Butter Boy. Buds: Snowball Cauliflower, Flash Broccoli. Beans: Fordhook Lima, Tavera Bush, California Blackeye, Blue Lake Bush. Pumpkins: Sugar Pie, Connecticut Field. Now they're being serenaded by Borodin's String Quartet #1. :woohoonaner: |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Wow Richard, I know you have a big backyard but what are you going to do with the extra harvest? You have a lot of plants to plant.

The tomatoes end up sliced on sandwiches, pizza, in salads; also in sauce (for freezing) and sorbet. The few remaining go to my immediate neighbors so they are encouraged not to feed the wild rabbits. Up until a few years ago, I was growing 50 tomato plants (10 varieties) at a time in trials, so from my perspective I've cut back quite a bit! The eggplants are grilled, parmesianed, go into a sauce or two, and some wind up in hummus. By the way, the hand-pump olive-oil sprayers are great for grilling or frying vegetables and cut way back on your oil consumption. The pimentos get stuffed with ground turkey and tomato, then baked. The chili peppers I cook with fresh or dried and send some fresh ones off to a few affectionados. My wife has a colleague at work from Romania and she says that the Bulgarian Carrot are "the kind". Last year I had about 3 times as much 8-ball squash than I could use, so this year I'm growing only two plants. My daughters like the Acorn squash, but the plants are not heavy producers -- I'll be lucky to get a dozen total. The cauliflower gets steamed or goes into cauliflower chili soup, and the broccoli is sometimes eaten on the way to the house ... I've found it takes about 8 bush bean plants to produce enough for two meals a week, so with 10 plants there is also enough to make and freeze some soup or chili with beans (sorry to those in Texas). I grow the sugar pie pumpkins for cooking and the connecticut field for decorating. I keep the vines from getting over 6 foot in length so each plant produces about a dozen. O.K., now that covers what I've planted for the first round! |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
YOU HAVE A SECOND ROUND!!!!
Yikes! It sure nice to have an acre of a backyard. Thanks Richard. Right now my grass backyard is gone. And also the flower plats. I've got bananas and citrus and fruiting trees instead. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
This is the finished version of my seed starting environment. The photo flash makes it look very humid on the inside -- in reality I can see right in.
There is a Hydrofarm "Hot House w/ Heat Mat and 6 inch dome" ( Hydrofarm - Hydrofarm CK64060 Hot House w/ Heat Mat, tray, 72 cell pack, 6" dome ) which you can find online for $25-$30. The heat mat does not have a thermostat, so I purchased a Taylor digital cooking thermometer at Target for $12. I put the heat mat on an ordinary light timer. After trial and error, I found that if the heat mat comes on for 1 hour at 11pm, then off for 2 hours, then on for 1 hour, etc. until 9am the soil will stay in the 70 F temperature range. The light fixture is an inexpensive 2 foot dual bulb unit with a diffuser from Fernie's favorite store for $20. It is a direct-wire kind, so I made a cord by beheading an old extension cord. The frame for the light was constructed from a scrap wood and bolts. The light is also plugged into a timer, set to come on a 7am and off at 7pm. The two bulbs are F20-T12 "Ott-Lite" florescents also purchased from Fernie's favorite store for $6 each. Tonight they are getting serenaded by The Frank Capp Juggernaut recording "In a Hefti Bag". |

The one shown in the photo below is a 6-year old DR Powerwagon which at the time beat the competition by a long shot in every aspect imaginable. It is still going strong and the only repair so far has been to adjust the tension on the brake cable last year. It is a workhorse - consider nearly all the work in photo of my yard below was done entirely by me and the wheelbarrow. Of course, I store it in the garage during rain or fog and this makes a big difference. The wheelbarrow is made by Country Home Products ( DRŪ Power Equipment ). They also make an impressive chipper/shredder. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
The plant man came by today with his pickup full of orchids, bromeliads and roses - with a few other bits and pieces. So I had to buy a named white cattleya and 2 hot red/orange bush roses - the vandas were slightly muddy coloured but he had a huge variety of dendrobiums. I have already bought a dendrobium this week so can't justify another. My neighbour who is worse than me about orchids didn't know he was here - but shot off to see him once I told her he was here. Who can save us from this banana/orchid addiction?

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
i took 9 canna seedlings out of their green house tray and potted them up in an 18 inch long pot. i have 11 more canna seeds waiting to sprout and i have 2 tx. mountian laurels poking their noses out the dirt. all these seed i got from xavier. all of these were planted a week ago. can you say WOOSA?. it is 60 * here today. unfortunately im not planting anything outside till the first week of may. i dont care how nice it gets out. after the freak freeze we had the last week of april last year, everything can wait an extra week. must be nice cassie for the plant man to come see you. id be in so much trouble..... wish we had one like that here.:2236:. oh and i potted up shays orange bird of paradise that she got at the lawn and garden show. she 'hates' plants but "you cant have a white one and not have an orange one." this coming from someone who wants to constantly bid on nanas in the classifieds, and who has 2 crotons and now a b.o.p. LOL!
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Four cuttings of Escallonia "Pink Princess". I just need one for my garden, so if they all take you might see the extras appear here for banana bucks or trade.
Here they are, just prior to going into my little indoor dome-house that I'm also starting veggie seeds in: |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Wife planted 2 hanging pot kits of strawberries plants, and I started 3 more pineapple crowns soaking, last week potted 3 blue spruce till they can be moved outside!
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
well if it wasnt raining so hard i would be outside instead of inside...today im gonna plant 30 strawberry plants i have. they will be planted in pots till i can get their bed ready( that will probable be in the fall.) i have to water nanas and feed them.was hoping to the weather was gonna be a little nicer i wanted to start taking the basjoos and others outside for a few hours a day. time to start getting them ready to go out in a month and a few weeks. so the heater in the den will stay off unless it gets to 50 *f in here. cant wait for spring.
p.s. got a hosta called fried bananas, got that planted today also. i have run out of room in the den, so i had to start putting plants elsewhere in the house. the issue with that is the cats. oh how they love dirt. so i remidied the problem....lots of cyanne and black pepper on the plants and on the dirt. if they get past that im at a loss...LOL! |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
i finally got my 12 ft. climbing peace rose back into the ground after 2 days of rain. i dug up an old rose bush that wasnt doing well. and i planted 12 cannas after i cleared the ground and turned the dirt over. the new bed where the cannas are is about 4 ft. wide by about 4-5 ft. long. they are on the top part of the bed and my mi. roses are at the bottom. the bed slopes down a hill. i hate it when you have a nice pretty flower bed and the grass weeds pop up right in the middle of it. tomorrow before class i will plant: ee bulbs, dahilas, cannas and a peony( that have to relocated from another part of the yard) and a few other things. im really hoping my cherry tree didnt die( if it did die i will be planting a crabapple tree in its place.i love eating crabapples, yummy!) its funny the things we plant. i love cherry blossoms, but i wouldnt eat a cherry for any thing. i guess i do it to feed the birds and for the blossoms. i might raid my moms yard for some raspberry bushes this weekend. i like their fruit. lol!
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Way to go Mskitty! Are you taking or teaching the class?
Today I planted 12" x 12" x 1.5" square stepping stones vertically along my chain fence line, about 8" deep. Those pesky wabbits have been digging under the fence this winter and I'm canceling their visas! ![]() |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
im taking the class, its intermediate algebra. i have to get up early so i can get this stuff planted. i have to go see the math tutor at 12 pm. and then i have math class at 4 pm. as far as the rabbits, get an outside cat. that will take care of the wasscle wabbits. there are a lot of cats at the animal shelter who need homes.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
In my area, outdoor cats and small dogs are easy prey for the coyotes. The rabbit population is flurishing because (1) people feed them and (2) the coyotes have learned domesticated animals are easier to catch.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
cookie there are very few things that do gross me out.my mom gets ill at me and my dad, we talk about all kinds of things( gross stuff to other people) and my mom smacks both of us in the head. lol. and yes easy prey for coyotes are domesticated animals. there are humane traps that you can get and set. then you have to take them off and let them go. thats the only suggestion i have unless you get a really big dog.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
today i removed 3 cannas i grew from seed(2 are 3 inches tall and 1 is 1/2 in tall) from their little gh and planted them in a pot. i planted 10 dinnerplate dalhias, 3 picaso cannas, and 10 ee's. all of these were planted in the new flowerbed in the front of the house. all thats left to plant out front now are my nana trees. there will be 2 d.oroniocos and my new cavadish dwarf.

Seeds here too. Campbell's Tomatoes, Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes, Amish Paste Tomatoes, Anaheim Peppers, Green Nutmeg Melon, Cilantro, Jubilee Watermelon, Beets, Hale's Best Melon, Carrots and Radishes. Broccoli is already up and a couple days away from being transfered to the aquaponics bed. The rest will eventually go into plastic baby pools or mixed into landscaping. Not going to have the traditional garden this year.
I've got a bag of red seed potatoes and a bag of yellow onions to plant as soon as the barrels are ready that they're going in. I'll be planting corn in clumps here and there also instead of rows. Yup, that'll be my pretend bamboo! And you know.... crook neck yellow squash can look pretty tropical too! |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Today I planted 10 'Angel Red' pomegranates and 5 'Austin' pomegranates. I will plant 8 each of 10 other cultivars later in the week as part of a trial I'm working on with the USDA folks at Davis.
I also did use my neighbors tractor with rototiller to work up the area where I will soon be planting my potted bananas. I think I'll wait a couple more weeks. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
over 100 wild daffies, over 40 red hot pokers, over 30 iris of different colors, over 30 orange parrot tulips. all of these were dug up out of my moms yard and relocated to mine. i gave about 40 wild daffies to my friend and 4 red hot pokers also. and my tomatoes from sandy will be here by the end of the week. i got the little pink cherry tomatoes and the reddish black cherry tomatoes. yummy. btw...saw lots of honey bees today. i have some little blue flowers in the yard (weeds i guess) and they were covered with bees today. i just cant pull the weeds knowing the bees are starving. lol.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I planted 8 each of the following pomegranate cultivars: 'Angel Red' (new patented cultivar), 'Wonderful' (industry standard), 'Parfianka' (also spelled 'Parfyanka' in one case at the repository at Davis, but that's incorrect according to Dr. Gregory Levin who sent it there from Turkmenistan and now residing near Tel Aviv), and 'Sin Pepe'. I have 7 more cultivars to plant over the next few days.
I planted a white butterfly ginger two days ago before I learned that Sandy had them for sale on this site. I hear they are really nice, so check them out! Harvey |
