A very good friend of mine, may God rest his soul, planted a five acre grove about 2 miles North of my farm location, and it has been producing for over twelve years. I have many potted seedlings from the best cultivars that will be my future grove. They do well on the island but not as well on the mainland, this far north. :2239:

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Today I planted another Papaya. I had given my mother some papaya last year. My brother planted the seeds & was alarmed by the palmate nature of the new sprouts. I asured him it was papaya. Now he has given it to me, so my fruit has produced a gift, full circle. May all be blessed in this season! :2239:

I potted up some Maui magic ee's, spider lily, and black magic ee's, dwf papyrus, and stuttgart canna for the ponds.
Yesterday I started a flower bed full of brugmansia, ginger, hawiian ti's, persian shield, shrimp plants, coleus, crotons, caladiums, hilo beauty ee's, variegated canna, decorative bananas, etc. It was going pretty good till it started pouring rain on me lol. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Had a very nice spring plant swap with my local garden tropics club. Came home with 2 Fatsias, a Tetrapanax Steroidal Giant, a Rhapidophyllum hystrix to replace the one that got cooked this winter, some purple castor bean seeds and a white datura seed pouch, and other assorted plants. Got most planted before it started to rain this afternoon.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
OK, I tried Googling "giant green aviritorum and came up with bupkis. What kind of plant is this? Inquiring (and juvenile) minds want to know. (Or did you put a giant green auditorium?)

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Reverse planting - dug up all the medium orange heliconias that travel so annoyingly and saved the pink and white gingers, ready to revive the bed and fill it with non-travelling heliconias that won't strangle the gingers. Now off to look for tasty replacements which is a time consuming but pleasant task. Mark - if I find some nice stuff (technical term) I will save you a piece.

Bought 4 2 gal roses and transplanted them to 5 gallon pots.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
PLanted the first Orange Jasmine seed. It is so hard to get seeds since it rarely fruits. Never attempted to grow its seeds, but after I had the surprise pumkin grow out of the mint, stranger things have been known to happen!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Tom , I don't know about growing in your zone but one thing about sweet potatoes is that they're prone to cracking due to water stresses. Keep them evenly moist throughout the season. Wet to dry and visa versa will split them. Good luck. Beauregard makes great mashed and fries too.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I just planted a kiefer pear tree.
Any one know how much truth their is that an orient pear needs to have another orient peart tree or kiefer tree in order to fruit. |

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
A couple days ago, I transplanted seven bell pepper plants (5 California Wonder, 2 Big Dipper) from the Aerogarden starter-kit to peat pots with soil - they're destined for my mother-in-law's garden, and they're already over 6" with many adult leaves.
This makes the total of plants in my living room: 6 Pattypan squash 6" 6 Hubbard squash 8" 4 pumpkin "Big Max" 12" 7 bell pepper 6" 6 cucumber ? green onions ? marigolds Edit: these were transplanted over the past three weeks. ... plus one pumpkin, three bell peppers, a pattypan, and a cuke that were slow to start, still in the Aerogarden. Those Garden Starter trays WORK. Next adventure: trying Miracle Fruit from seed the same way! |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I planted some regia sundew cuttings today.
I am so incredibly paranoid about these. I have read everything I can find about them, and I got some great advice from the person who gave them to me, but I'm still worried that they're going to die on me. Regias are notoriously difficult, and I'm still a little bit a newbie. But I've followed all the advice I could, so I have high hopes. Wish me luck! |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Today I trimmed roots off 2 cherimoyas & potted back into 8 gal tall tree pot. It lost a lot of soil mix in last 3 years!
Hoping it will fruit this year. (I'll show you Harvey!):) |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Well, I finally was able to get a break in the rain and work to get some new plants in the ground the past two days. Got in right at 60 plants in that ranged in size from small 6 pack size plants to 7 gallon plants. Mulch added and ferts added. Now Mother Nature is doing her thing!!! Also repotted quite a few plants and even planted a newly acquired bismarkia palm into a 60 gallon pot....

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Stumpy, how big are the plummie cuttings? I have some that show a leaf after 2-3 months, and some that take forever, or give you a flower but no leaves. Hang in there, they're worth it.
|
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
They were 11-16 inches when they arrived. I planted them 4 inches deep.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Very nice. looks like you pot up your cuttings same as I do. I use perlite and MG potting soil 50-50, then top with pea gravel.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
I picked up a real nice 7 gal Needle Palm at my local HD for $45, and planted it where my needle that didn't survive winter had been. (This one WILL be protected for the winter.) Also put in some dwarf mondo grass as a border plant around the pond beds.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Yep thats exactly how I did it. This is my first try at cuttings. The first two are cuttings and the third one has some roots. It was grafted from the seller.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
So today, being that I SO want to grow unusual tropicals here in zone 5, I decided to try something I had been reading about. After I was done setting this up, I realized I probably picked everything out wrong, but considering the back breaking (or potentially back breaking) work, I went small to start ... if it DOES actually work, next year I will fracture something to get it totally right. But if it fails, I will not be rubbing down with BenGay and sucking Advil like candy for no reason! ;-)
TIRES. There are tires everywhere in land fills and all over the sides of the highways in areas, and from what I read, Canada is great for culturing their potato crops early in mulch inside tires ... in zones as high up there as 2!! So, for those of you who haven't read about tires, just a quick summary ... the idea is to dig out a hole deep enough (in Canada anyway) to sit three tires on top of each other inside the hole ... the sun, being hotter than it feels in winter months actually heat up the rubber and start their little potato"lettes" growing way early in the year to extend their growing season by something like four months. It creates an open topped "hot house" of sorts. So, Ang being the inventive and creative sort, thought ... if zone 2 can grow potatoes that early (and later too) in the year, why can't I winter over some of the corms, tubers and bulbs of my fave plants outside in tires in zone 5???? Right?? Seems logical. At least to me anyway. With a little extra mulching for heat retention and exposing the tire edge, it should work, right? Well, I used an R14 tire (kinda small), and then like the rocket scientist that I am not, picked, of ALL things, Xanths, to plant in it. I used only one tire, not three, as I only had one on hand. Like most insane plant persons Helll bent on a project, I could not wait til tomorrow to acquire any more tires (although I will get more to do more beds tomorrow)! Xanthosomas being HUGE, with a small tire for a "bed", may not work out at all, and I realized this after I got everything done and stood back to admire my handiwork. What a dummy! But anyway ... Visit my album to see the tire attempt as I have not figured out how to get photos embedded here yet. I will post a few pics as soon as I am done here. I dug out and placed the tire with the sidewall at ground level. Remember, you have to rely on that tire to heat up in winter and it can't do that very well if it is totally submerged in soil. Then I filled in the entire tire itself with the dirt from the hole I dug, leaving the rocks and some assorted plant leavings from mowing the lawn. I packed it really well to prevent air pockets inside the tire to kill roots. Then I filled in along the tire's edge on the outside, making sure to fill it in tight. Included some rocks and debris then more soil from the original hole. Next I mixed a batch of ProMix (my favorite soil) with very light spatterings of pebbles, heavy compost and some peat. Filled in the center of the tire, once again double checking to make sure the inside of the tire itself was packed full. Planted the Xanth in the center and then added about two to three inches of red cedar mulch over the top of the whole thing, including the tire sidewall, for summer "looks". When colder weather knocks the ears down, I will go and scoop the mulch off the tire itself and throw it to the center for added insulation, leaving the sidewall exposed to the sunshine. I have not decided yet if I will actually cover it further. Will have to do more research on that. Maybe a slighty raised glass pane or something. Tomorrow I am going to do this again (time permitting) and plant some C. illustris in the tire. They are SO hardy, I would think they will surprise me. But then again, this whole thing might be me grasping at straws!!! :::sigh::: Thoughts? Further ideas?? |
Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?
Fascinating idea. A much larger iteration of the water columns for tomato plants. Keep us posted.
