How did you get yours to root? I tried that about six years back by putting one in water and no luck.

I twist the top off and cut off all the yellow, into the white a little is ok. Pull off the bottom leaves until about an inch or so of bare stem is revealed and put into a glass of water in a sunny location. Change the water every couple days and in a week or two it will sprout roots. This has worked on at least a half dozen for me. I only ever had one die and that was two months after planting in the ground. Never knew why, it just didn't want to grow... I have another that is growing fine in a little plastic cup outside until I figure out where I want to plant it. It's getting kinda big... Another was in a pile of scraps I threw out beside my banana which decided to live, another pineapple there as I don't have the heart to kill it now.
Sometimes they start looking like they are dying, but that is ok. They like sunlight, even when doing this. They have a small root system so they make a great potted plant. What they do not tolerate well is cold. We had a light frost last week and they all got yellowish tinged on me, but are still alive.

What do you mean by twisting the top off? I don't eat pineapples, so I'm not that familiar with them. You mean twist the foliage out of the fruit itself, no cutting?

Well, I took the Nestea plunge and bought a pineapple. I twisted out the top per online video and removed the leaves, and was surprised to find roots along the first half inch or so, over an inch long. Looks like I grabbed a good 'un. It's loaded with them!

Put it in water for a week or two and fresh white roots come out, those are what you want.

Consider growing a better tasting pineapple fruit available from online resellers in Florida.

Thanks Richard. I dislike the taste of pineapple even more than bananas, so I'm not bothered with the taste. I'm just growing them for the plant, not the fruit. Most especially, because my dad told me he didn't think I could grow a pineapple from a top. I'm mostly doing it just to show him it can be done.

Hey JP, thanks for the suggestion about the clear plastic bag. I used a bread wrapper and fits perfectly.
