What's blooming in your garden? (bananas) - Page 19

I've got my first Nam Wah flower...

and my first Goldfinger...

These pictures are about a week old; the Nam Wah has seven hands of 16 fingers each... but who's counting? And, like the Goldfinger has all along, I'm still waiting for it to catch up... still waiting for the flower to "bloom." These two bananas were planted about two weeks apart; but the Goldfinger has been a sloooow grower, while the Nam Wah has been prolific.

In any event, very excited... so, what, like 4 months? Banana creme pie for Thanksgiving?

Congrats, take a marker and put the date on it so you will know about how long to harvest.

I'm not familiar with that type, but others here are. I've heard from 3 to 5 months depending on the type, the weather, the number of leaves, etc. Someone should chime in presently to fill you in on their experience.

Tim, looks like you got your photos mixed up, this one is Ducasse and the one listed as Ducasse is Golfinger.

In answer to your question about Ducasse (=Namwah), most people find them very tasty. Be sure to let them get very ripe (some black on the skins) to get the most flavor from them. Or saute them in a little butter -- which makes everything better!

Update on first Dwarf Brazilian to flower for me. Only 6 hands total with about 60 fruit, but the plant is quite small, only just under 6'. Very pretty flower.

Mark ----- another of your naners flowering at small size pstem. What's going on? My Goldfinger always fruits at 9 ft or so and has a much larger caliper pstem. Same for D Brazilian but a little shorter. Have you done a soil analysis? This sounds like soil contamination - salts. What is the pH? And what's your fertilizer regimen?

I think there's a few things going on, but it's not a yard-wide problem. This plant is in a spot that just doesn't get enough sun, and it is the first time it is blooming. The Goldfinger that fruited so short and skinny before, lately has been flowering at 9 ft. I have two Dwarf Namwah flowering at 6.5 - 7' as first time producers, so I expect their pups will get even taller. They are super stout.

I have done soil analysis and there is no problem with salts or pH. I don't fertilize tons because of the boron deficiency of my soil, and when I do push the fert, the leaves come out all messed up. I'm slowly trying to rectify the boron problem, but am doing it a little at time, to avoid overdoing it. I'll get there eventually!

To add to the bundle, allow me to present my [maybe] (Dwarf?) Ladyfinger Banana, which started putting out the tip of its flag leaf on Saturday. It's my very first homegrown banana bloom, and accordingly I'm quite pleased it's decided to come before I go off to college next month

Trebor - please keep us updated with photos. I want to compare the bunch/finger size against a Double Mahoi. I've heard they are closely related.

Dwarf Red finally putting up a bud. P-stem is about 8 1/2 ft and this is the dwarf
variety. The Tall Red must be pretty big. The petioles and leaves are thicker
than any other 'nanner I'm growing so the leaves always stay pointing upward
at an angle. Never gets as much wind damage as the others, also. Picture was
taken from an odd angle because the leaves are packed pretty tight, and this was
about the only way to get a good view of the bud.

I have a Double Mahoi next to the dwarf , it also has fruit on it A couple plants away from them I have a Cavendish "of some type" it also has fruit

Congrats! Perhaps they'll ripen up and be ready to harvest by the time you come home for fall or winter break.
