Hello,

I recently bought my first banana plant, a gorgeous red banana and now it is in trouble. The leaves have brown spots and are drooping. I thought maybe I was over watering but it has only gotten worse since I cut back. I have been feeding it Eleanor's fertalizer. I live in the San Fernando Valley, the days have been in the 80-90's. The banana is in part shade.

I think the over fertilizing maybe making this susceptible to sun burn and that's why the leaves are brownish-yellowish, I'd use half the amount of fertilizer and maybe get it away from all that warm brick and sit it in the shade on some grass until it recovers.

I would totally cut the fertilizer... Nothing but water and sunshine for a few weeks...

That's not a red banana, it's a Maurellii. It's an ornamental species that's not in the same genus as edible bananas, but it's closely related. They're very commonly grown around here and they do well here in the valley. How often are you fertilizing it, and with how much? Also, you may want to stick it in the ground sometime soon if you have room. Preferably in full sun.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice. I will move it to the shade and stop with the fertilizer. I will let you know how it goes.
