Default Possible Blue Java? Is this Normal?

Hi Everyone,

I planted a pup about 4 years ago and it’s gone crazy since. I currently have 2 flowers with large bundles as shown in the photos. One of them started to grow a second bunch of smaller bananas. Is this a normal thing to happen when letting the flowers grow without cutting them?

Is this a Blue Java? If not, any idea what it may be?

Thanks all!

Those look like Saba (cooking bananas, not Blue Java). Generally the peduncle has male flowers below the bunch, and they never develop into anything, but yours appears to have had some female flowers lower down than normal, and they've decided to develop into even more nanners! Bonus!

Thanks so much! Spot on with the Saba it seems. We've been trying to confirm what they might be for quite some time now, so very grateful for the hint!

Not Ice cream. I have seen an occasional flower spike that reverted back to female flowers for a second time. Not common, but not an issue.

In my searching for another variety I do recall seeing a variety listed as commonly having a second set of females.. of course I don't recall what book/pdf it was but its out there in the www somewhere.
