Default Bananas and Figs

Finally after 3 years my banana plant is making some fruit. It’s supposed to be a blue java but how do you tell the difference between it and Namwah. So far I can see around 60 bananas growing with more petals still to open up. On a second not banana related note, should I keep my fig trees in my greenhouse this winter or is it more healthy for them to stay outside and get a proper winter dormancy?

hard to tell about the type of banana without pics. blue java should be a grayish blue. you can really tell by where the fruit is attached, namwah is thickish.

as far as your figs are concerned, what is your zone.

Bananas Brindando Re: Bananas and Figs

I’m trying to upload banana photos from my iphone. It keeps saying it failed if anyone can explain how to upload them. I’m in zone 7b, Long Island NY. So the figs will get a real winter if outside and they can definitely survive, but I rather put them inside for the winter if they don’t need the dormancy for their long term health. Like my venus fly traps need to go dormant or they get sick and don’t last long. Thanks for any help.

Figs do not need the dormancy or cold. Might be better to let them go dormant and put them somewhere above freezing but still cool enough to keep them dormant. Blue Java / Ice Cream was a very distinctive blue-grey color. Judging by the number of bananas you say have formed, it is more likely Namwah / Misi Luki. If you bought it from a big box store they are always Namwah / Misi Luki in my experience.

Banana and fig, both are edible, soft, pulpy sweet fruits which are rich source of potassium. They are grown commercially. [Note : Banana is a true fruit, simple fleshy berry, developing from single ovary.
