I signed up to look at more threads so I thought what the hell ill make some posts. I planted a "Blue Java" today. I was doing some googling on the species and came across this site. Have now been here a few hours reading haha.

Anyway I am from Australia up north on the east side in the state of QLD. First time banana grower. Its pretty hot and humid here perfect banana growing weather except for the lack of rain most of the time.

I also have 3x banana plants I picked up from a nursery on our way back from holidays down south a bit. They are now growing really well. The fella we got them off said they were lady finger/sugar bananas but cant be sure till they fruit.

I am fairly new to gardening, most things I have tried to grow over the years has just died on me, now im a little older (maybe mature) im enjoying it and putting the work into making stuff actually grow. Ill try to post some pics of the plants growing over summer to show how fast they are actually growing.

welcome[gday mate]..nice modest crop..we all started somewhere right..good on ya ..keep us updated..i would recommend making a circle around them..clear out some of that grass and replace it with some grass clippings or some other type of mulch..pile it up..keeps water in weeds out no competition for water between grass and bananas..i use clippings as they decompose they release natural good stuff the nanners like..

Good luck with your banana growing. I'm from Sth Queensland with more decent rain. Sounds like you are in central Qld around Rocky. Keep the water up to them and they should do well.

Im a bit further north in Townsville.
When it rains it rains we get a good avg rainfall but it all comes at once usually dec-mar the rest of the year is dry as a bone. The town has a good water supply that goes over 100% every year so I dont need to worry about using lots of water on them.

The black pipe in the pic is an old irrigation pipe i put in years ago I might install a 360' popup sprinkler and have it on a timer. Maybe 1 hour every 2nd day?

Just noticed your update 2woodensticks, your idea sounds good. Ill use the catcher next time I mow and use it as mulch.

Townsville which is classified as the dry tropics has some outstanding gardens, like the Palmetum.
With good gardening techniques, good results can be had. Especially for bananas the extra sunshine coupled with town water and a good feeding regime will produce quick results

Just ordered my 5th plant from a tissue culturer up north. Turns out my blue java came from them. I am allowed to have 10 plants where I live.

My 5th is a Pisang Ceylan I liked the red colour of the plant. Plus I want to plant something big to shade my car a bit. Ill update some pics on the weekend.

Might start a journey thread somewhere its nice to see pics of someone starting then their plants and fruit later down the track. I dont think this is the area for such a thread.

I got my Pisang Ceylan from the same place in Tully. Hoping to get a Blue Java from there as well

Brod: They ship them $30 to your door. I think for Brisbane area they want to see a permit.

2woodensticks: We have restrictions here on what plants were allowed to grow and how many. I don't need a permit for my area but I can only grow 10 plants. This is off the the site brod linked above "You can grow up to a maximum of 10 banana plants or 30 pseudostems of approved varieties for a residential plantation." I thought a pseudostem was the "trunk" of the plant so if i cut all the leaves off the trees i can have 30? LOL

We only need a permit to move plants from one address to another.
They won't ship plants till they see a permit to move them.
