Hey everyone!
So, in a nutshell, i've been in the Air Force for 17 years now and I just got home from Afghanistan. I knew there were a couple of banana trees in my yard (which i love) but i didn't know that in the 6 months i was gone, they would grow so big and produce so many bananas. Very cool I think. However, I don't know a thing about bananas other than i love to eat them. So...i'm going to post some pictures and see if anyone can help me out with what they are (edible or not, etc). Thanks everyone!!!!

Welcome
and, I wanted to say, thank you for your service. My marine son served 2 tours of duty in Iraq and returned home safe and whole previous March. So, welcome to the banana growing folks' forum, I only just started with 3 young plants, and am gaining enormous amount of knowledge in the short time since I found the site. |

Hi everyone and thanks for all the posts!!! Everyone seems pretty friendly so far and that is awesome! So...I picked a few bananas off my big tree today...going to wait and see what happens to them within the next few days off the tree. Pretty funny, my 13 yr old made me cut one in half to see what it looked like...well, it looked like a banana, but it smelled like a cucumber. So...her, being cute, licked it and it was the nastiest thing she's ever tasted. she ran to the hose and washed up...was soooooo funny!!! I still don't know what kind of bananas they are. hahaha plantains for all i know.
Anyway...one of you mentioned Aviation...well I am an A-10 Warthog Airframe mechanic. I'm a Master Sergeant now, but still like the metal fabrication portion of the job. I run my section, but believe me...the old man still has some fabrication skills. Aviation does rule!!!!! we TORE IT UP over in Afghanistan...just ask the bad guys. ![]() |

Nice shootin, Tarpsprad
! A-10 Warthog? Think I got one of those in my collection. Luv'd planes & spacecraft since I was little. Wanna fly someday, myself, & get to know how to work on planes & jets! Well, after I get through HS. Rough tasting nanner!? !! If it's a banana, you can put them in a paper sack & punch a few holes & leave it 2 or 3 days. That's the best way to ripen them up. If it's a plantain, better cook it first. Got some great nanner recipees here !Have fun ! |

Welcome Ron. On your 13-year old "nastiest" banana taste experience, most probably, it is still green or unripe.
...anyway... part of kids' curiosity. On a serious note though, please remind her that green banana has some latex and this latex is considered an allergen. Cooking or ripening is needed. Again welcome... |
