Hope we don't get confused or weird IMz. Just moved from Southern California - Oxnard and now living in Seminole Fl ZONE: 10. Lived on Oahu for about 5 years, was stationed on the windward side and loved my time there. My landlady had about 30 Apple Banana trees in full bloom at any given time throughout the year. I adopted them as they adopted me. So I found a few on Ebay and started it alllll over again. My neighbors say I enjoy working in my back yard. I feel the trees repay you with their growth from attentive care. Came to this forum to find answers....but finding a lot more in past posts. My main search is to find out how to properly remove pups for replanting. I tried the sharp knife, but guess I didn't get down low enough and watched them all pass bummer. So with your help, I'm confident we'll make this happen. Also purchased a dwarf that was not properly tended too. She's a beauty now ![]() |

Scott,
Jarred (Mediahound - the Administrator) has some posts regarding the separating of pups from the mother, with photos. Here are a couple of threads: Time to separate the pups for the Spring Digging Pups |

Scott, nice to have you on the board with us. I was wondering if you were aware that the Apple bananas on the mainland are different from the Apple bananas in Hawai'i? I think there was a thread about this somewhere.
The Apple bananas here on the mainland are generally referred to as 'Manzano'. Have fun, and no worries about name confusion, I go by chironex here, and most people that know me also know it is spelled with one T. |

Thanks Chong for the thread links.
Was never aware I needed to dig down to the bottom of Mom to get roots. My Manzanos are in 21" pots right now. Question: Are the roots on their own or embedded in the Mother corm? ScoT: Initially I was not aware there is a difference between the island and mainland Apple Bananas. Great forum and great information! I lost about 3 hours today surfing through the threads and learned so much today. I'm thinking in the next 4 months I'll be able to taste the difference. I keep the 15-5-30 on them every few days and they continue to impress me with their response to care. I have pups that are 2 feet tall and they're sporting large leaves. Probably best to wait for warmer weather prior to seperation from Mother corm |

My family ~
May 08 Received 4 Manzanos in the mail, 1 was broken from its roots...but survived! ![]() ![]() You can tell which 1 didn't start with roots. I actually broke the roots off in a near-fatal 2" planter removal operation..... July 08 ![]() Sept 08 ![]() Jan 09 ~ Last week + my dwarf. 2 others (not pictured) are on the side of the house. Trying different locations till I find the best place to plant them. ![]() ![]() So that's where I'm at and enjoy having them everyday! Excited about the future with the Forum's help ScotT out ![]() |
