A landscaper at my horse barn trimmed all my banana plants like he would palm trees, including one that was ready to flower. He only left about 4 leaves of the canopy of each plant. I was upset about it for weeks.
So having said this, do not trim banana plants like palm trees. Only yellow or brown leaves go, never anything green. All green is needed for a proper photosynthesis and to fill in banana fruits.
