Hello Everybody!
Planted my first patch of bananas this past March and they seem to be doing well. I started with three namwa's and two raji puri and as July 30 I have a total of 26 including pups and young bananas produced from the original stock.
My father successfully grew bananas to fruit when I was young with plenty of sun, water, St. Augustine clippings spread thinly to minimize matting, and a bit of luck with the winter temps. I have always found banana trees to be attractive, friendly, lively plants with a rich personality so decided to add them to my backyard.
I prepped the bed by digging out a section of the yard almost thirty feet long by five feet wide and four feet. Cut out all foreign roots and backfilled with 2,000 lbs. of cow manure compost and yard dirt. I performed the work in February and March when it was cool. That was a lot digging and earth moving with a shovel and hoe!!!
Research led me to bananas.org. I got tired of getting kicked off after reading a couple threads so decided to join up to get the good stuff!!
I have attached a couple photos from time of planting till today. I uploaded to the gallery also but was not sure how to link between the post and the photos in the gallery.
