Will Bananas Grow In Wood Chips?

I have heard a few people talk about planting bananas directly in piles of wood chips. Has anybody tried this and gotten good results? In my area any potential wood chips would be mostly oak and a...

Re: Is Fruiting Determined By Season Or Maturity?

From what I gather die offs, cut backs and transplanting reset the plant's development. Maybe not back to zero, but it definitely sets it back some. That ties into my plan. I expect to be planting...

Re: Is Fruiting Determined By Season Or Maturity?

Awesome! I think I'm going to get serious and work on getting an acre of bananas planted. I'll do the prep work now but I want to wait and see which varieties I planted this year do the best over the...

Is Fruiting Determined By Season Or Maturity?

As far as I understand it if you were able to keep a banana plant from going dormant in the winter it would flower and ripen fruit in the same year. That suggests to me that fruiting is determined by...

Re: Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

The rains have returned but unfortunately it looks like my banana is not as super as it was. Now I'm only getting two leaves a week. :(

Will Bananas Always Grow Straight Up?

The soil has settled around a few of my recently planted bananas in such a way that they have a slight lean. This got me wondering, do bananas always grow straight up? I can't really ever remember a...

Re: Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

These were both from water pups. They were dug over a year ago but neglected until the last few months.

The newest leaf on this particular banana is still forming, it looks like I won't get three...

Re: Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

No, and I don't even use fertilizer.

Re: Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

Wow, very impressive. Bananas are certainly an intriguing plant.

I'll try to remember to take some pics tomorrow. A new leaf just unfurled today and the next one is already peeking out.

Re: How do you plant/take care of a sucker?

I plant them ASAP, I water them regularly and I expect the leaves they come with to turn yellow and die. Give it a few weeks and it'll make nice new green leaves. The pups just need to get...

Re: Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

This thing is crazy. As soon as one new leaf has unfurled you can see the next emerging. It's not very tall right now, only 18 inches of p-stem, but it is twice as tall as the other Dwarf Cavendish...

Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

I have two Dwarf Cavendish plants in the same soil that get just about the same amount of light every day. They're both doing well but one of them is especially strong. Within a few weeks of being...

Re: Growing Praying Hands Bananas in Central California – Zone 9 – Walipini project

That is a fascinating concept! I might try something like that where I live but it will have to be for dwarf varieties only and I'll need a pump to keep the water out. The only problem I can see is...

Re: Can Bananas Be Used To Dry Up Land?

Awesome! thanks for the offer! It'll probably be a year or two till I'm ready to tackle that project though.

No, but thanks for the heads up. I'll be interested in some coontie palms.

Speaking...

Re: 6 foot AeAe's for $49.99!!!!!!

I have come across a deal like that on a very rare occasion. I always wonder why it happens? Clerical error?

Re: First Banana Plant

Yeah, Dwarf Cavendish is a bad one to start with. I started with 3 Dwarf Cav pups a year ago, I didn't even take care of them. Now all the sudden I'm spending hundreds of dollars on bananas and...

Re: Can Bananas Be Used To Dry Up Land?

I'll take that under advisement.

I live on a little over three acres. I don't have much of that dedicated to bananas yet but that is likely to change. I'd like to turn one acre into a jungle type...

Re: Can Bananas Be Used To Dry Up Land?

I'm out near Plant City.

You're certainly getting some good results. The only reason I'm skeptical of the stable products is just because I know people who keep horses are liable to give them all...

Re: Is There A Way To Produce Bananas All Year Round?

I don't get cable/satellite/whatever so I mostly just watch dvd's. I did buy a Shark Week collection one time but it was mostly dramatizations of shark attacks which I don't find especially...

Re: Can Bananas Be Used To Dry Up Land?

I see you live in my area. I'm all about biomass, are they pretty much giving this stuff away or what? And what kind of quantities are available? I could use a few dump truck loads for sure! I'm...

Re: Is There A Way To Produce Bananas All Year Round?

I've been thinking that perhaps some especially cold hardy bananas could be worked into the rotation to make up for the winter and viente cohol may be part of the solution as well. I am currently...

Re: Is There A Way To Produce Bananas All Year Round?

This leads me to a question on bananatomy... the p-stem is essentially made up of leaves but the wide part of most of the leaves seems to fall off leaving only the leaf stems to form the "trunk." So,...

Re: Is There A Way To Produce Bananas All Year Round?

Drat! I may try anyway, just to see what I get. The actual number of cold days are few and they're rarely all in a row.

Re: Can Bananas Be Used To Dry Up Land?

The water can be there for up to a few months but it's only a couple inches in the deepest spots. This happens at the very hottest time of the year so presumably this is when the bananas would be the...

Re: Is There A Way To Produce Bananas All Year Round?

Ok, that sounds more like what I had in mind. I'm sure it doesn't scale perfectly but I might try something like that on my place. I'm developing an interest in planting an acre or two to bananas to...
