Just like how nobody could have imagined terrorists crashing planes into buildings.

/sarcasm

I think the odds are about 0% that the smartest people at Monsanto thought there was anywhere near a 0% chance that weeds would develop resistance to glyphosate (though I readily grant that some random individual employees of Monsanto and a small number of university scientists may have been sufficiently dimwitted to hold such a view).

IMO, the "gee who'd a thunk it?" defense lacks any cogency. Unfortunately, it mollifies most of the bell curve, which is why governments and corporations usually use it. The article's ending note (i.e. floating the opinion that this situation couldn't have been avoided) also reeks of spin and mollification.

The comments after the article are worth reading:

Quote:
A corporation full of scientists thought evolution would be suspended JUST for them ?!!!!?...
Quote:
Someone at Monsanto forgot how pollen works?
Quote:
Some of us on the farm saw this resistance coming and expected it. I was seeing some weeds that tolerated small amounts of glyphosate in the first years after it's introduction. Eventual resistance of those weeds was not unexpected.
Quote:
Oh please, Monsanto. Don't insult my intelligence. You knew all along that weeds would start becoming resistant to glyphosate.
Quote:
I'm sure Monsanto knew glyphosate resistance would come eventually (they're not stupid). The USDA is not stupid either, and I'm sure they had some motive in accepting Monsanto's BS.
Quote:
Um Yeah. Who would of thought that the Titanic would ever sink.
Quote:
Same old story.

Company: New technology X is perfectly safe!
Researchers: Yes, but what about the possibility of Y?
Company: Y will never happen. We have total confidence in our models that show that Y will never happen in a million years.
Researchers: Yes, but Y does with Z [similar technology].
Company: Sorry, you're wrong.

(After Y happens with technology X.)

Company: Wow, that was unexpected. Who'd have thought Y would happen? Completely unforeseeable, and not our fault. Moving on...

Thumbs down Re: Why Monsanto Thought Weeds Would Never Defeat Roundup

Scientists warn of link between dangerous new pathogen and Monsanto’s Roundup

"On January 27, Vilsack gave blanket approval to all genetically modified alfalfa. Following orders from President Obama, he also removed buffer zone requirements. This is seen as a deliberate move to contaminate natural crops and destroy the organic meat and dairy industry which relies on GM-free alfalfa. Such genetic contamination will give the biotech industry complete control over the nation’s fourth largest crop. It will also ease the transition to using GE-alfalfa as a biofuel."

Always follow the money.

Wake up people, it's later than you think!

*Sigh. I'm not surprised. It is pretty comical to me though to read the part about where they say: well gee it took us so long to do it, and was so hard to accomplish, there's no way mother nature could do it better. HA..HA..ahhahahahah
