Default Daughter is moving to England

My daughter and her husband are moving to England. He is in the Air Force and got orders to go there for 4 years. I know there are some members here from England and was wondering if any of you are around Lakenheath. I have been wanting to do some research on the area but have been very busy and have not had the chance yet. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for her but as you can imagine she is pretty nervous. So if any of you are familiar with the area I would love to hear from you. I know she will be fine, but she will also be very far away.

Darn, I hate doing the mom worry thing!

Thanks so much,
Jane

I'm sure your daughter will be fine in the UK , nothing is all that far away in the UK. There are many UKOasis members in the area and I think Amulree Exotics Nursery is going to be pretty nearby. It depends what she is into as to how happy she will be. There is the whole of Europe to explore , Paris is only a train ride from London. We move around the World every 4 years or so . It has it's stresses and benefits . It was easier before we had kids . We have lived in the UK , Canada , Greek Cyprus , France , Germany , Hong Kong and the US . If you want to PM me to ask questions feel free .
Best Wishes
Steve

Hi Jane. I live near Ipswich, about 40 miles from RAF Lakenheath. The base is, to me, a little bit of the US embedded in the Suffolk countryside.

Outside the RAF gates, Suffolk is a sleepy county. Lots of fields, agriculture, nice country pubs with open fires and beer (not lager, but our own 'bitter'!).

One problem new arrivals seem to have is with our roads. Of course, we drive on the 'correct' side of the road, whereas most others drive on the 'wrong' side. With rural roads, there are rarely markings to guide you onto the correct side, so accidents happen. People also look the wrong way when crossing the roads, and are surprised by vehicles (especially in London where it's quite mad - traffic wise).

So basically, just remind her to look both ways, and be careful driving until they are used to it.

London is easily accessible from Lakenheath by train or road. Train is better. London gets totally mad near to Christmas though.

Hopefully, she'll love it here. Let me know if you need any more info.

I have also lived in England for a year. I lived close to Sheffield, in the Peak District. This was one of the most memorable years of my life!

England is a fantastic country, and the people are fantastic too. When I retire, I hope it's somewhere in England.

Thank you all so much for your kind replies!!! My daughter called me yesterday and they arrived safely. She was most worried about her cats, but they made it ok. She was VERY tired as she was going on just 3 hours sleep in a couple of days but did mention the beauty of the country side. I didn’t talk to her long due to her lack of sleep and her needing to check in with other people. I look forward to her next call when she will be able to tell me more about where she is.

Thanks again!!!!!

And right now, we are just getting the 'winter' ales. These are dark, typically chocolatey beers with a big 'depth' of flavour. Drunk at room temperature (not chilled) so you can taste them.

Mmmmmmmmmmm

Funnily enough, yes!

Charles Wells, a UK company, brew Banana Bread Beer, which uses fair trade bananas. It's rather nice - I've had it quite a few times

For the US, Lionstone are the importers. http://www.lionstone.com/

I'm sure you should be able to get hold of some, if you want.

They don't do chocolate & banana beer though
