I moved back to the DC area from NY about 6 years ago. I've been reveling in the lack of appreciable snow here. As far as I'm concerned, I'll be a happy man if I never see another snowflake. Unfortunately, my family (except for my son) lives here, so Florida or California remains a dream.

Yeah...............aint life grand? This was our biggest snowfall to date accumulation wise and we're supposed to get down to single digits in the next few days. Ridiculous for March but on par for this winter...................what makes it worse is that it was about 60 on Friday,

We are s'posed to get good weather from west soon. We just had a snow storm since last eve...lots of power out just south of me. Only about 4 inches of snow but it's very wet & heavy - & slippery. Lots of accidents last night.
I don't know how much longer I can take this cold, dark gloom! Let me know when my weatherbanner shows sun & temps upper 60's! Going to hibernate now...AGAIN.

30 degrees C and some really amazing volcanic-induced thunderstorms, here. It's been raining so hard that people in the province north of me are worrying that their crater lake is going to crest out and flood the provincial capital. This will be the first time in recorded history it's happened, if it occurs.

Here in South Florida it is the dry season, but today was awesome!!! We woke up this morning to a very light rain. It stayed slow and steady, with thunder in the distance. It began to rain harder, but gently, then slow, and rain harder again. This is an excellent blessing at our dry time of year from the one that sends the rain, and all good things!!

A few years ago I was in FL in March & it rained every day around noon & cleared up by 3. Maybe that was unusual.

Okay, I need to revise my weather. I'm still at 30 C and magnificent thunderstorms with really fat rain, but having read the Sunday Flooding Special of the paper, I find that the house I used to live in, down in the south of the country, just got washed down its hill, as did the houses of several of my friends. It's even flooding here in Quito, which is at 12,000 feet above sea level! I can only imagine how bad it is on the coast; they've been cut off from the rest of the country for a couple of weeks now. Can I send some rain to any of you?

Sheesh Lorax! No more rain for us please - the garden has been a bog for the last 3 months and the visitors are asking where the hot sun is! But the last 3 days have been beautiful.

Sorry to hear about your flooding - it is very hard to deal with as we know here to our cost!!

Everyone else - hey! spring MUST be just around the corner - it is nearly April after all.

Patty, a lot of it depends upon where the Bermuda high is sitting or moving, and intensity. On the east coast that pattern sometimes sets up early in the season.

Lorax, I'm very concerned for all of you. When a crater lake breaches, it can happen on a less-durable wall. The resulting erosion allows a tremendous amount of water to drain from these deep lakes.

I'm not in that city, thankfully (I'm in Quito, Puyo, and Manabi, usually). If Lago Yaguarcocha goes, though, the city of Ibarra is toast, and probably also the towns of El Chota and Los Valles. Thankfully Otavalo is one valley over so it wont be lost. However, there's almost no chance of it breaching a weak wall - it's an indented blast crater that created its own valley (one of the larger explosive dasitic explosions of Volcan Imbabura created it several million years ago.) It would be a really amazing feat to break a crater wall, as they're all uniformly several thousand feet thick of hard basalt.

I'd be more concerned if there was a warning out for Lago Cuicocha or Lago Quilotoa, which are elevated crater lakes.

There are craters in the western US and elsewhere with one side composed of pumice grains, etc. glued together with volcanic "varnish". Over time this becomes the lower wall, with the remaining sides composed of iron and copper igneous slag. When the crater becomes full and breaches, the flow on the weak side is enough to tear out the already degraded varnish and a good portion of the lake drains.

Yes, please send it to Las Vegas. About 3 inches per week will do nicely thank you. Of course, Vegas will flood like crazy, but it needs to be flushed anyhow.
