Hi I guess this is a question for Brian in the main as I'm not sure which of you does Aroids to the same degree as Brian . Anyway I was research round the web and came across these names ,

Xanthosoma atrovirens Blue Giant

Xanthosoma violaceum violet stem

Xanthosoma preissii Black Boy

I've wanted a Xanthosoma violaceum for awhile now and hope to get one soon. On the web there seems to be some referrence to Xanthosoma violaceum Blue Giant , but there is also Xanthosoma atrovirens Blue Giant ,which name is correct , is there a source for these plants. And how does someone get away with selling a plant called Xanthosoma preissii Black Boy

These guys list all the plants but with a minimum order of 200 dollars it will be awhile before I can put together an order. Looks like a good place to get plants tho .

Jarred you must grow some Aroids with your Florida climate it would be a Crime not to . Colocasia or Alocasia or .... come on admit there are other plants in your garden and the whole space is not one solid Nana patch

Here is what I know.
The xanthosomas are really a big mess. Their is a botanist working on them and I have had him ID a lot for me. I can usually tell most common forms apart easily but their are a lot of forms that are much harder to ID and some can be possible hybrids.

Xanthosoma Atroverins Blue Giant is a form I named around 7 years ago. This is a natural form collected of Atroverins. This form grew much larger than most other forms that were used for eating. It has a dark blue leaf and does well in very hot humid summers here.

Xanthosoma Violaceum has many names it is commonly eaten and goes by the name Malanga. If you find it at exotic grocery stores as tubers.

The black boy form as well as Xanthosoma preissii Black Boy and violaceum blue giant. I believe these are all forms of Violaceum. I am not sure if they are all the exact same plant in my experience they usually are. But if you get them from a collected source at times you can get different stem colorations and larger growing forms. These may be selected varieties but with out photos as proof I dont usually buy it.

I have a few other forms I have violaceum variegated and robusta variegated as well as other forms of robusta and a very odd form that has huge leaves that cup up. Truthfully I dont know anyone that may grow more of these than I do at the moment. I hope to propagate a lot of them this season if possible.

Thanks very much for the info Brian, I'll wait until I can come over before buying any Xanthosoma, Blue Giant sounds like must have plant.
Thanks again for the information , we don;t seem to have a Aroid expert over at UKOasis and I've missed a lot of knowledge over the years. We almost all grow a few Colocasia and Alocasia but the selection in Europe is a bit limited.

Now Jarred I'm spoilt for choice as the English say , my only problem is finding all the money to pay for all the plants. I'm working on that at the moment.
The family visa for the US does not allow me to work , But, I get a few thousand dollars a year to for a Hobby and or training/education. So I'm thinking of asking a few of the US Nursery stars , in areas I'm intersted in to give me some two day workshops in propagation , culture and such. The people would get payed well to have me help out with nursery work and perhaps I could pickup the odd cutting or two.
I shall explore this idea soon.
