Instead of experimentation, it might be cheaper to buy "Plant Propagation" edited by Alan TooGood. The "national home gardening club" edition of this book is usually a lot cheaper than the DK Books edition -- and the only difference is the outside front cover.

Today, I potted up a purple passion plant, a Josephs coat, and a sad lil' prince from lowes.

Cookiecows, just tear that top right off that pineapple, strip all the lower leaves off till you see the roots.
Once you see the roots, take off 2 more rows of leaves. It wont hurt the plant. You might have to take off another row of leaves so you have enough stalk to stick in the dirt. If you have some leaves below the dirt, they will rot!
You dont want that, so take off enough lower leaves.

Then stick it right in the dirt! Pack the soil tightly around the stem, and up to the last leaves. Water well and leave it alone.

Place it where you want it to grow. If you pick the pot up often it wont root well, because you'll cause it to have spaces around the stalk where the dirt is, or it will fall over. You want to keep the dirt tightly packed around the stem. Water about every 2wks in winter. Hope this helps. Heres mine...........
1st pineapple fall 2007

Thanks Lynn .... you sure have a nice pineapple plant! I am going to go buy a couple more. My daughter is pregnant and has been craving them anyway. I'll leave this last one in the pot for a couple weeks and see if it can pull through but don't have much hope for it. I want to get more going.

Am I supposed to watch for the existing leaves to start growing taller or am I looking for new leaves pushing through? These leaves are dead down to about a half an inch from the base.

Deb, the leaves will start growing longer outward as new leaves start growing from the center. Remember you dont have to cut off the top, just grab ahold and snatch it off!
The top will come off clean compared to cutting it off.

A legume with shallow roots. Clover is one example.

Wink Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Today I replanted 60 little plugs of various greenhouse plants which I rooted in the last three weeks from my own cuttings. By using 1/2" to 1" cuttings I got 288 per flat of 1" pockets. I was able to place both flats on heating pads and under some suppl. lights at a south window. About 75 have rotted but that leaves me with 500 "free" plants. Now the 60 plug flat goes to the light rack upstairs in the garden/palm room where the fixtures under the top three trays also provide bottom heat. From there they can go to the unheated racks under lights in the basement light room where I store semidormant stuff that needs room temp. I can accomodate more there if I need to move them into 3" pots before spring. I might be able to find room for some in the chockful greenhouse as well.
By rooting them this early I can propagate earlier in less space and then turn them loose when it gets warmer.
It's great to have new life sprouting in the dead of Ohio winter. It's headed for the upper teens tomorrow night and Sunday. The snowdrops are pushing because it was in the 50s a few days ago and a chinese witchhazel has half opened its reddish flowers.

I just made a picture of what I did Jan. 31 08. I was given some cloned orchids at the World Orchid Conference. Five red Cattleyas, 21 white Phals and 43 pink Phals. The Phals will bloom in one or two years while the Catleyas will take 4 years.

About a hundred passionflowers; costaricensis, Lady Margaret, malformis, x belotii, alata, Blue Bonnet, gritensis, kermesina, racemosa, reflexiflora, Sunset, and serratifolia, plus 50 Clivia, some fuscia and lantanas. Over the last few days I potted up about several hundred orchids; Vandas (in baskets), Phalenopsis, Catesetums, Stanhopeas, and Cattleyas. Things are busy!

Wow! I thought I was productive today mixing 3 cubic yards of soils with a rototiller, but you out-distanced me by a long shot!

You wouldn't happen to have any of the coveted yellow Clivias?

I use a soil mixer that mixer that makes about 2 cubic yards of mix, makes things very easy. I do have some yellow clivia seedlings; Kirkenstock Yellow, Good Hope, Golden Dragon, and Arturo's Yellow.

Thanks Pito I'll send you a list! The P. costaricensis is huge and the P. parritae is doing great now that I have increased my cooling.

A two-yard mixer! An admirable piece of equipment, maybe there's room in my garage ...

Do you have a favorite or least-liked yellow clivia? I'm trying to pick out one for my home garden.

Sorry for the late reply Richard, my favorite yellow is Sahin's Yellow. Its brighter than most of the others. Last I saw the price per seed was about $20.00. Inkcube is supposed to send me some when his pods are ripe, it will bw a tough 3 years to wait for a flower.
