Thanks, Emily! My Passiflora edulis 'Frederick' fruits are still hanging on. We've had 12 or 13 days of frost (starting the day after Thanksgiving). Last Sunday night was the worst with frost by 9pm and some leaves dropped from the plant, but it still looks pretty good. Most of my fruits set in September but one was last July. Wish I could try Flavicarpa here!

Yum! Our mulberries ripen typically in May.

Caloosamusa,
What variety of mulberry? A couple of months ago I bought a couple of Morus nigra mulberry plants (dwarf Persian, Black Beauty), for which I've heard rave reviews about the fruit, but won't have fruit for some time. They are just in the bud-break stage right now. It's been a long, very wet, cold winter here in So Cal. |

The tree the fruit came from is a "Tice" cultivar, locally developed in Ft.Myers and has a low chill requirement. The fruit normally ripens late April to early May, but not this year. I have a small "Kampong Sweet" from the Fairchild Tropical Gardens, that is also a good producer here. I think the species of both of these Morus is rubra, but I could be wrong. They taste wonderful as last night my wife made a Mulberry Cobbler! Yum!!
I have tasted a Morus nigra that grows on Campus at UF, the fruit is large and darker but is not as sweet. Thanks Ventura and Richard. ![]() |

Morus rubra (red mulberry) becomes a large tree and some cultivars have dark and/or black fruit. It is a North American native.
Morus nigra is the true Pakistan native that grows to a large shrub. Quote:
