OK, picked up 3 palms yesterday at Home Depot for 19.99 each- 2 Trachy fortunei and a Butia capitata. While they're not huge, for the price they have some nice trunk showing. I'm definitely planting the windmills to stay out all the time, but while I would love to have a winter hardy Butia, I don't relish starting the winter protection chores again, although at this size its not too bad.

Decided to plant the 2 above trachys I just bought next to the front sidewalk. I'll have to add one or two more. My question, probably answered before but I don't remember- do deer (white tail) eat palms? They haven't touched my banana (basjoo clump), so I'm hoping for good luck.

edit- Great looking queen palm, Andreas. Also love the Dactylifera, Ante. How tall is it?

How cold does it get there in Maryland? For where you are, that is. Pindo's are quite cold hardy, able to take temperatures into the low teens and single digits for a short amount of time. Although not quite as hardy as a Windmill, they're quite tough. The only thing that's ever killed any I've dealt with are the stupid Rhinoceros beetles.

Wow. I almost type beatles.

I've tried butia before in a normal winter here, with protection, and it died. So I'm staying with needles, trachys and sabals for leaving out for the winter. I hate to sacrifice another butia.

Beatles=Beetles. LOL!
