 Here too, is my variegated and very colorful Croton plant, which allows you to enjoy the splendor of Autumn hued foliage all year round...  My dwarf mini sunflower plant with two new flowers about to open...  This is a deciduous dwarf purple-leaf Concorde Barberry which has beautiful maroon foliage that becomes even more intense during Fall. It will have small yellow flowers followed by red berries...  The leaves are so pretty...  : ) |

I love Crotons. I have 2 of them that I've had for 3 years. Usually I kill them, but the 2 I have now have been very tolerant. My mom's friend had one that bloomed for her indoors. It was a weird flower. I love barberries but do they have thorns on them?

The one I have isn't thorny, thankfully.
 I really dig the purple leaves though.  I think Croton plants are beautiful and the one I have reminds me of Autumn. Here's a nice Rudbeckia plant I also have at the cottage...  : ) |

My friend has some mini barberry plants and they have sharpest thorns, but the foliage is beautiful. I love croton plants too. Do Rudbeckias have a scent?

I used to have a couple of large barberry. Mine were thorny too. They do have pretty leaves and cute flowers, but I hated the thorns. I have some decent crown of thorns too, but again I hate the thorns. I guess the only ones I really like are roses that are thorny.
Beautiful Croton! I don't have much luck with them either Cam!  That dwarf sunflower is cute. How big does it get? That dwarf red Japanese Maple is gorgeous! I love it! How are all those doing (the ones you grew from seed)? I have tried a couple of those too and they just don't like our heat. ~JaNan

I'm surprised I've had my crotons for 3 years. They lose some leaves during winter but all of them regrow in spring when I put them outside

Hi everyone. Here from Massachusetts.
I'm thinking now that I probably should of gotten the musa basjoo instead of the super dwarf cavendish as it gets very cold here in MA. But, in any case, i'm going to take care of my plants and allow them to grow. How is your banana plant doing now Holly Berry?

Upon closer inspection, I see that the barberry bush does have thorns...very sharp ones!
Guess I'll have to be careful.The dwarf sunflower plant is about a foot tall, Janan. It bears many flowers at once. Here's a bloom as of yesterday...  Here are the mums now blooming at the cottage...    Banana plants are doing well and thanks for asking. Here's a super dwarf cavendish pup that I took a pic of a couple days ago...  : ) |

Oh and Janan, I forgot to mention the homegrown Japanese Maple trees I grew before... I was worried they needed to go outside but of course I couldn't put them out at my place because they'd be gone within the hour! I stupidly brought them to my girlfriend's place, thinking that if I reminded her, she'd water them when they needed it...Yeah right! To make a long story short...they're all dead!  It there's one thing Jen is good at, it's killing plants with total and utter success! Not to worry, I'll grow some more again soon. They were so beautiful, weren't they? Loving my indoor Hosta plant these days...  : ) |

Tomatoes Squash Peppers...
I would start by preparing the bed now with organics (compost and worm poo), and work in by double digging and place a heavy tarp on it over the winter months. Start small... 8x8! |

I do get squirrels and a rabbit from time to time.
Tomatoes sound fun. But i might try a dwarf citrus tree or maybe dwarf apple tree. Hmm

If you're a beginner Tommyg, I'd start with something easy so that you'll be successful and reap the rewards of your efforts. Nothing wrong with growing whatever you are drawn to though also, and learning through trial & error.
When I first started gardening I grew lots of tomatoes, strawberries, hot & sweet peppers, and swiss chard. Easy as pie, if you can provide some good sunlight (south site preferred), consistent nutrients (organic, of course ), and lots of water (sometimes daily when it's extra hot). Good quality and well draining soil is everything, and working in some amendments is good idea. I enjoy cow and sheep manure, as well as blood & bonemeal...and I also add a bag of peat moss which will break down clay as an extra bonus. Peat moss will hold moisture longer as well.  Keeping an eye on your gardens and watching for problems, is also a good idea. If bugs are an issue, there are lots of home remedies that work very well. I use many spices to deter bugs, that really work...such as hot chili peppers, bay, whole cloves, and garlic.  Good Luck!  Here's some more of my mums here at the cottage...
