Yes you need to make sure all the meat is gone by trimming with a sharp knife, then pluck several of the leaves off the bottom leaving a bare stalk sticking out. Let it dry out a few days and then plant it.

5 1/4 lbs! 5 1/2 lbs!!! Wow Mitche!!! I'm telling you I'm green with envy. I had some fruits from potted specimens, they were like 2 lbs haha. I planted some out into the ground this year, hopefully I get some nice size fruits next year.

Does anyone know what kind of pineapple are the ones they sell at lowes, target, the grocery store and other random places? The one with the small pineapple on them.
Thanks, |

Smooth Cayenne is the most commonly grown, it's the commercial variety sold in most grocery stores.

This is not the commerical one. The plant looks very different. I don't mean the fruit that you start a top with, but the plant they sell with a small pineapple already on top.

They could be any variety, nurseries force them to bloom early to make them more appealing to shoppers. The plants I've seen like that were too small to support a full size fruit.

I have gotten one like that to fruit twice already and the fruit never reached full size. The plant was much smaller than other pineapple plants. I never did anything to force a fruit either.

I thought I had posted this picture of this Smooth Cayenne but I'm not sure in which thread now that we have so many Pineapple threads. Anyway it has grown considerably so I'll post another picture tomorrow providing it's not raining.

Longer than I can remember! The dogs have broken the roots on this plant so many times it's a wonder it ever flowered! I think it took about 2 years to flower.
