I think the roots are fairly shallow, as the tend to flop over easily.
I've found that the best way to get the top off, is to twist it off. It comes odd clean, with no fruit attached. Here are pictures of some I grew from seed: The seeds starting to germinate. ![]() Young seedling. ![]() Seedlings at 3 months. ![]() As you can see, they're slow growing. Great Mitchel! I have two in pots right now that are doing great. I've not had success in growing pineapples in the ground. Been trying for YEARS.

Don't give up Anna! I'm starting to thing they are like bananas in that they need a certain amount of optimal temp days before they will fruit. I have a variegated one in a clay pot that still hasn't flowered and it was planted about the same time as my others.

Yes they are Cassie my two schnauzers are a terror they like to run throw my Cannes and knock them over but i have to lafe they are so cute even if they are beastly!
