when to bring out of dormancy?
how far in advance of bringing them outside to be planted should i wake up these "dormant"
ensete ventricosum maurelli i do have mite problems in the grow area and after taking this picture i noticed there were insects all over it so i cleaned them up a bit so considering the bug problems when should i pot these up and put them under lights? Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
ok so i checked on some of the other "dormant" bananas and some were pretty hurting looking
this matoke was really tall when brought inside but had shrivelled up to the point where i figured i should pot it up now while there was still something left of it and after some trimming same with these mystery dwarf plants which i got free at the end of the growing season just to experiment a bit i potted two of the four ensete ventricosum maurelli the other two i will pot up a month later after potting this fiha 02 was looking so good i left it and will pot it a month after as well this was done a week ago and here is what they look like now(yesterday) |

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
correct me if i am wrong, i am guessing too close to the hurricane pro so its growing sideways.... i actually haven't used fans this year though other than the forced air from the furnace
so after the responses i turned the "dormant" ones back upright but first i will show the progress of the ones that were potted and went into the room with the lights here are the "dormant" ones about a week ago after being propped up here is what they looked like yesterday they have been getting a little light leaking out from the other area and roots misted infrequently the other ones i potted up are not doing much and or not looking that great |

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
yeah, hurricane fans. looks like they went thru some pretty strong winds.
when i have had mine grow like that it seems like it takes something out of them. they don't straighten as fast as they first bend when the pot gets tipped. and they don't grow so good after they straighten some.

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
I logged in today for the first time this season specifically looking for some input on this exact question.....so thank you for your post. How much water have you given them (I'm assuming its minimal) at this point and what is the temp/light situation in their current abode?

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
update pics first you can see by the older pics that i potted them in rather wet soil my thought was the root balls are bone dry so hopefully when they wick some water away the result is a good moisture level by the roots but i may have gone a little on the damp side the maurelli liked it but they were growing without light and an all dried up root ball the maurelli not in the pots but righted vertical again are being misted with water infrequently as i believe iowa did with his plants when waking them up depending on the situation... if you have no room to wake them up and need to store dormant for a long winter season i would recommend ensete ventricosum maurelli... as an aside i would also like to try green dragan's method with this plant and basjoo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=650yBmEGSG4 |

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
My basjoo had pushed through their outside straw wrapped protection so I've released the beasts!!! Keeping an eye of the weather though, not expecting the soft new cigars to make it but all should be OK.

Holy Crap!! - That guy really gets with the program. Looks like a full time job. But he does have a beautiful tropical garden in the frigid North.

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
so i ended up waiting until spring to wake these two up and slam them right outside in a partial sun location and the seem to have made it through and woke up just fine
potted and brought straight outside a week ago this is what they looked like the free dwarf plants i acquired in the fall did not do so well with the dormant storing this one looks like what i normally expect when a plant declines(if you are lucky) lots of pups this one..... woah it actually pulled through and came back from the rotted dead mess that it was update pic on one of the ventricosum which were woken up early |

Re: when to bring out of dormancy?
well here is an update on the ensete ventricosum maurelli stored dormant over the winter
3 out of the 4 survived and did well one is at a friend's place (full sun.. did well) one was in the shade until it grew enough to get part sun..(did well) one was out front in full sun but a little crowded out by the basjoo and matoke by mid season (did well) don't think the early wake up did much of a difference this year I will be keeping all my plants going under lights and no stems have been stored dormant backyard: front yard: |
