Mixed feelings

When we returned from our annual winter vacation I realized to my horror, that our house sitter,
who has been so reliable on previous occasions, has completely neglected watering our plants.
While only one of them, a miniature palm actually died, almost all of them, save for the quat and
this rubber tree, lost a lot of leaves, including the ornata shown here:

You can probably see on this picture, that all, but the last two leaves, are completely dried up
and the last two are partially so.

After caring for this plant for a full 3 years, keeping it in fine shape all that time, it now, still in
this deplorable state, is finally producing a flag leaf. What should be a joyous occasion with a
flower on a healthy plant is turning in an event producing mixed feelings.

I prepared the above a few days ago, but had trouble dealing with recent changes on Flickr and
was also very busy dealing with piled up work obligations. So please fast forward to today:

The flower is finally emerging, after the PS had attained almost twice the height, which its
brethren in Vietnam were, when they bloomed.

From preliminary appearance it looks like the flower will also be bigger than the ones,
I have seen in the open air parks in Vietnam.

Great picture of the deer looking in the window. At least they can't get to your banana. How long did it take to flower after the flag leaf? The rubber tree plant should be totally ok. They are so tough. Good luck with the banana. Keep us posted.

Hi Annie,

The picture of the flag leaf was shot April 9 and the one with the flower emerging on April 20.

And on this one, shot April 29, you can see little bananas emerging

Here is a picture of a beautiful flower of an ornata, which still had all its leaves:

Shot this February in Vinpearl Park near Nha Trang, Vietnam

You can see the long stem of the flower, which lifted it well above the flag leaf. That
did not happen with my obviously weakened one, I also thought, that the bloom time
would last much longer, than it did in mine. Well, the next one is probably between 12
and 18 months away, we will see better then.

This is not a m.ornata. This stems with buds Hippeastrum reticulatum var. striatifolium 'mrs. garfield'. It is often grown in South-East Asia.
