Hi there,
I received my first banana plant, a Manzano, in a 4 in pot today. I'm curious about potting recommendations. Is it best to gradually upgrade as the plant grows or could I go straight to a larger pot? I'm putting this plant in a heated 4-season all glass sunroom. ![]() |

![]() Myself, I gradually increase container size to fit the plants requirements. On the other hand you can hobble the plants growth by keeping it in a smaller container. Your plant will need a large indoor footprint. You may check out my photo gallery . There are photo albums which you might find of interest. |

Welcome to the org! Manzano is a good choice, if you are wanting it to bloom and give you manners it will need a big pot. This variety grows to 12 to 14ft on average. Their are a lot of people that no here that gradually increase the pot size as the plant gets bigger. Their is no right or wrong answer.
Happy growing, Darla

Right now you banana is small , maybe start off with a gallon container and eventually work up to a 25 gallon. Banana varieties grown in containers will be smaller than the ones grown outside in the ground. You also want to make sure you have really good drainage. Happy growing, Darla

Thanks, hdynad. That's helpful to know. I'll start it small then and work it up to the larger pot.
