Default Do I need bigger pots?

Are the pots I've chosen adequate for my plants? How soon will I need to increase in size, and how much bigger should I go?

Also, should I be cutting leaves off?

Thanks! So you don't think they're overly restricted in the containers they are in at the moment? When do I know to increase the size?

I keep a habit of periodically popping my plants out of the pot and looking at what the roots are doing. If they are getting packed then gradually upsize. I'm still learning bananas but so far overpotting seems to be more of an issue.

I would put them in bigger pots and get them out in the summer sun while you can... But, that is me.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

Thanks for the info. What's the best way of removing them from the pot without damaging the plant?

Point taken. I read that they shouldn't get full sunlight straight after shipping to avoid shocking them, but it's been about 3 weeks now so I think they can take it at this point.

Ideally I'd love to have them in the ground in tropical weather, but that's a bit hard to come by in the NY metro area haha.

They're currently in 12" clay planters right now, what size should I move them to?

Put the container on its side......... And stomp on it a few times whilst rotating the container.....
Your plant should slide right out.......

I planted mine in the biggest pots I could find. 3/4 Gravel in the bottom and a very sandy mix with loads of composted manure. Expose them gradually if possible. They might look a bit damaged at first but they'll get used to it and will grow stronger and faster.

Bananas can be held in small containers for a long time with no real ill effects if managed well (not over fertilizing is important and easy to do with soluble inorganic fertilizer). They will just stay small if kept in a small pot. The question really is what do you want out of them? If you want them to attempt to fruit one day, they will need much larger pots. If you just want some interesting looking plants for foliage, you can keep them whatever size you want by keeping them in smaller pots.

I did not know that. Thanks.

I figured they would go for full size at all costs.

yes

check out smart pots or any other brand of fabric pot
they are much lighter than clay for when it is time to move them back inside

Richard once said a minimum of 65gallon container for good fruit production

I have had my banana plants bloom in the small pots.

Grasp the base of the plant and turn the pot upside down. Just slides out. If not it needs to be upsized.
