Default Conditions for Greenhouse Temp-Humidity-Ventilation?

I’m building a little greenhouse - and trying to figure out what the ideal conditions temperature and humidity wise for bananas. Google and what I’ve read here suggests don’t go below 60 degrees or above 90? Is there a better range to shoot for? Humidity wise is where I can’t seem to find enough info… I have controllers than can set temp and humidity parameters and looking for the range to set. And other ideas and suggestions would be welcome. It will be able to fit a few dwarf varieties.

One study I read said the ideal temperature for optimal growth from bananas was 72-88F. I don’t know about humidity.

It depends on what cultivars are you growing. Namwah, Blue java, and Orinoco are more cold tolerant varieties that do well for me in my greenhouse. Typically the lows at night are 40s inside. It gets about to 95 for about an hour in peak sun and climbs down after. I do get some growth but it is slow. Maybe like 4 leaves from Nov-Apr. Humidity floats between 50%-70%.

I’m in zone 10B I know a few of the varieties I have will be good to go outside. However - the dwarf red is not happy outside right now! Definitely want to set it up for that - the non cold tolerant bananas. Would like to see if the dwarf red, kokopo, and grand naine will make me bananas quickly in there. I have a better range now for temp I believe. And then humidity - at least 50% and I’m thinking below 90% as somewhere I read states above that is when issues start to happen. Thank you bill for the dwarf red it was perfectly beautiful until I left it out on these cold nights.

Dwarf Red is definitely cold sensitive. I’m in Long Beach CA. It gets cold damage to the leaves during winter. Some winters all of the leaves might get brown. One winter it did die to the ground. But that was a very cold winter. We got down to 29 degrees. In the summer a pup shot up from the ground. My Dwarf Red is about to flower. My goal is to keep it happy this winter so it will flower in the spring. I plan on putting Christmas lights on it to keep it warm and happy.

a good frost takes out all my banana leaves, new ones grow back.

from what i have seen of reds so far, they seem to like moist rich ground. i understand youall have had alot of dry weather.

I had a few in pots - the red for sure was very happy with lots of water when it was still hot and dry - definitely the candidate the greenhouse is for. I really want some red bananas.

Bill, how tall is your red that’s ready to make some?

Yea, when it comes to cold and dry weather they are wimpy unless protected or watered well. I grew them for years and just wrapped and mulched. We had a polar vortex in 2018 record low since 1950 and they died. My replacement one is only two years old but very picky with water and fertilizer. Likes a lot of both.

Bill Post up pictures of yours flowering and the progress.
I have a 6ft-8ft polycarbonate greenhouse and made my own temp control exhaust fans and have a heater set for 57 degrees but it heats to 60 degrees and turns off until it drops again. It can get well over 100 inside even with 30 degree temps by noon. I also have automatic vents. I have several different types growing inside and as long as they are watered well and feed they are happy. When temps fall below 55 degrees bananas stop growing.

That’s awesome - that’s what I’m currently building and trying to install/set up. Not polycarbonate but the polyethylene sheeting. Got it finished built and wrapped today - remainder of the week and weekend going to install the fan hook it up to the inkbird temp controller to exhaust when it gets too hot and have a heater for it - then set up the inkbird humidity controller and found some plans for a diy self filling humidifier for that. Trying to decide on if I should get a dehumidifier or a second exhaust fan to control if humidity gets too high.

What kind of heater are you using? Wondering if my little radiator heater is a good idea.

Just a Lasko tower rotating heater. It has a bunch of options but only use the heat energy wise setup. Last one I had bought in 2013 and just quit last winter.
Don’t know what to tell ya about moisture with the plastic sheeting. But I would probably have a pusher and puller fan system that way air is really moving so moisture won’t linger.

I will do just that! It's typically quite dry here anyways, unless the humidifier goes crazy I'm sure a fan pulling it out will be plenty.
