Yes, I second that on the Nono. On the Florida Variegated, the white parts will burn in strong light. My Nono’s white parts are turning pink.

i should have double quoted this post, the darkman is saying you can sell these plants here.

you know you have a very pretty banana. on ebay, sold at auction you could maybe double your money.

even on HERE such plants are not sold often, very rare, they are hard to get. and you only have 2. for many your price is very doable.

good luck. if you haven't already sold them, try again.

There are many different sellers in the San Diego area selling variegated TC Floridas and TC Nonos on the internet.

The reason I believe they are from San Diego is because their shipping address is San Diego.

this is my manini/aeae. the pattern of the coloration is different and so is the shape of the leaf, while the colors are similar to my florida.

the first is the manini and the second is the florida.
beam2050 is this leaf a florida or manini?

So WHO?

Sometimes Florida leaves are easily distinguishable because of their color pattern but sometimes they're not.

The Leaf Habit will distinguish the two plants apart as will the Petiole Margins. It's better to be correct all of the time than to guess and be correct some of the time.

there is basically 3 forms of higher learning.

1; you sit behind a desk and pay a teacher to tell you what he might think you need to know.

2; you learn from someone you know.

3; the school of hard knocks.

i pretty much see this forum as being under category 3.

now for category no. 1; it was easy to ace school. just listen to the teacher and anything he would say would be on the next test.

category 2; i know no one who has knowledge of bananas, except for here.

category 3; i plan on getting my a$$ handed to me numerous times.

,,,,,,,,,,,,professor.

not looking for a fight or argument on my part. this is just speculation on what you said.

I tried to have a discussion with him about how he treats people on here and how people ask for help and he basically doesn't answer questions most times. He may know his stuff but, a teacher.......?

The one that you managed to save, was it one of Florida you were selling for $220 in the above post?

If yes, what happened to the other one?

I'm fascinated with what you are achieving although I wish it was easier to follow a timeline of your progression through these different mixes and how each proved to be more successful.

It seems like your mix might be better for how I grow if it really retains up to 40% of its volume in water.

Both of our mixes put an emphasis on high soil aeration but differ on the moisture, you starve the plant for water and I try to maximize it.

Water uptake clearly effects the speed a plant grows.

If you are growing TC Florida for resale and want to try small pups, message me. Pups grow much faster at the start than TC plants and that should save you quite a bit of time.

Hi PR,

It's been an up and down ride for sure. I've tried different soil mixes (Potting, garden soil, top soil mixes with perlite with some success and some failure. I actually came across using PON from people that were growing Alocasias. I figured I would try it out since they're prone to root rot as well. So far so good.

I did want to clarify something though. I was only watering that rotted plant a little at a time because I didn't want it to rot some more. Once I saw multiple new roots, I watered more liberally.

For all my plants in pon, I place them in a container with holes for drainage and put that container in a saucer tray. I water the pot from the top until water fills the saucer about a 1/4 inch high. Pon will wick the water up as the plant drinks. Once the saucer is dry, I water again. I repot into a deeper pot as more roots reach the bottom because I don't want roots in standing water for more than 2 days. Everything I've played with was small so its easier to move around. I will have to figure things out as pots get bigger.

when the professor suggested to me to use the aquarium rock to grow in i was having trouble overwatering tc's in potting soil. so i bought a manini/aeae from him and also bought a bag of brown, round, polished aquarium rock for my adventure. i used cloth to hold the rock in a 2 1/2 gallon pot with holes on the edges and set the affair in an aluminum cake pan and watered a of couple times a day not allowing the cake pan to fill up by emptying it when it had more than a quarter of an inch of water. the manini died from rot. [hold your thoughts read on]

well after it died i left it in the pot and didn't water for a few days. when i went from disappointment to curious i pulled it out and found the round, polished rock to still be very wet.

so i spent a couple of years thinking about it. first i looked closely at the professors rock and it looks liked to be crushed granite irregular in shape and size. so i used to the wife's aquarium rock that was irregular in shape and not being used. i then used the same size pot with holes in the bottom and covered the holes with stainless steel screen because the rock made the cloth pooch out of the holes. i planted a raja puri in the rock because i have plenty of them and i found a pup about the size of the manini, it was expendable.

it was planted towards the end of march of last year.

[SIDE NOTE] i looked on amazon for crushed granite and found rock pretty much the same aggregate as your pon for bonsai plants. and there were many, many listings.

so this time i watered pretty much every 3 to 4 days. the plant survived and put out leaves. i even started watering from time to time with compost tea...... i pulled the plant out of the rock a couple of weeks ago and found the corm to be the same size as i had planted it. very few roots all going down and intertwining with the metal screen.

i am now using an aluminum frying pan with the handle removed for a plate because nothing else will take the weight. you can see in the first picture what happened to to aluminum cake pan.

[i also forgot to add] the fact the when i pulled the raja puri out of the pot the rock was not as wet as the smooth polished aquarium rock was. as you can see in the second picture.

I'm not sure what about pon that makes it different from aquarium rock. My only guess is the porosity of pon is higher. If you talk to anyone that has planted fish tanks they'll tell you that the colored aquarium rocks is garbage. Most of them use Carib Sea Eco-Complete or Fluval Stratum. People of been using stratum to propagate philodendron cuttings and I've had good success with it as well. I have not used it on a banana corm though.

On that same subject, here is an Alocasia that I bought from someone who had it in was looks like aquarium rocks. Here are pictures of the old roots vs new roots after switching to pon. Something about it make things grow differently.
