3,300 banana plants

This is what I pulled out of my lab today for their final growth stage (leafing out before delivery). It may sound like a lot, but compared to the ~52,000 plants that various people are waiting for us to deliver, we have a long way to go!

There are a few different varieties in the room currently (also some 'Manzano' and 'Pakil'), but all of the ones on that cart are 'Dwarf Brazilian' and the 'Williams' Cavendish.

Its hard to gauge how long it took to make these, since we are continually producing more and more all of them time, when we make a new box of plants we put it on the shelf to let them grow. I just went through and found which ones were close to being ready.

And how many have you found out of all those bananas ,that are variegated??>

Gabe, just wondering how many you, individually, make each day at your lab? I would imagine it can become monotonous, but certainly hones your skills at carving out the meristems.
My first one seemed to take forever. But, I was being careful not to cut too much off. Sure is a small thing to find in a huge corm.

What we are doing right now we call "sorting", where we do not divide any meristems, we simply sort previously subcultured explants by size and cut them away from each other (if needed). Buds which are leafy with pseudostems are transferred to a medium with no cytokinins so they can resume normal growth for about a month until they are ready to ship. Buds with no leaves or pseudostem are transferred to a medium with a small amount of cytokinin to encourage them to leaf out. This encourages rapid multiplication of new buds (each of those divided pieces regenerates and forms more buds), thus one bud may quickly become about 16 (1x4x4). During that phase, you could do a lot more per day since it was easier and quicker. I think I would make about 500 per 2-3 hour shift.

It is very monotonous work, but its great practice and experience for higher level TC work in the future. Plus, I have full access to a banana TC lab for my own experiments!

Alpha010 suggests a good idea that might be profitable. Many nurseries make more $ shipping than in actual production.

The picture of the Manoa valley fe'i with the pup in the background is nice!

Some would buy some of those small TC fe'i at $10 apeice or more. You are in a position to make some Rare bananas available to members of the org.
