Re: I Want A True Blue Java
I have had some really good ones, but also some that were so-so.
The so-so ones were harvested too early, were not filled in enough, because I was expecting a frosty night. Right now I am looking forward to a nice looking bunch, but no signs of yellow yet. They are hanging since September (!). Basically it is missing consistency so far in my experience. Last edited by crazy banana : 07-04-2014 at 10:03 PM. |

Re: I Want A True Blue Java
So they take a long time to develop and ripen, huh?

Re: I Want A True Blue Java
Well, not living in the tropics, what do you expect from a September inflorescence?
I have another bunch that showed its first hand about two weeks ago. Hopefully that will take less time to fill in and ripen before the winter hits. |

Re: I Want A True Blue Java
A mixup by agri-starts FL that needs to be corrected. Ice cream is really a tall namwa. I am wondering if California has the right tissue cultured blue java/ice cream or if they get theirs from Florida area.

Re: I Want A True Blue Java
Pretty much all TC come from Agristarts, no matter where you are located in the USA. If you use the search engine here on the org, we have had some discussions about it here in the forum. I had offered them the real one.

Re: I Want A True Blue Java
The term "Ice Cream" banana is practically useless, because it has been used to name at least 2 different cultivars.
Also, somewhere on the web, "Ice Cream" has been referred to as being the best flavored & textured banana around, a sentiment not universally agreed with. I stopped using the term "Ice Cream" in reference to bananas a couple-few years ago because it basically lost its meaning. ... and yes, we do have Blue Javas in CA, but I ain't going to call anything "Ice Cream" unless describing a dairy product. Aside from that, I like Blue Javas but they're not nearly as cold tolerant or flexible in use as my "not so dwarf" Orinocos. My buddy, on the other hand, prefers his Blue Java over Orinoco. ... but then I really like tostones!

Re: I Want A True Blue Java
So if I have a "Ice Cream" that I bought at Lowes. What variety should I be looking at? This thing is 3 years old and only 2-3 foot tall. Its a very slow grower, but very healthy. Last year it didn't grow much at all , and this year it was the last one to wake up. Almost gave up on it

Before I joined this forum, I had purchased one at Lowes which originated from "La Verne" nursery. That one was definitely not a Blue Java: fruit, inflorescence and p-stem look like Namwah to me. Very different to my real Blue Java I am growing now. I assume that yours might be a Namwah. |
