Is anyone in California have these banana varieties: Pisang Raja, Raja Puri , Isang Ceylon, Misi Luki , Lacatan ,Glui Kai, Ice "Blue Java" Cream, Hawaii Dwarf Apple Manzano or any other unusual best tasting / fragrant India , Vietnam, Philippines, Thai Banana varieties ? I am starting a banana project in search for best tasting banana that can grow and fruits well in my Zone 9 North of California ,and for future project to make my own hybrid varieties. At this time I only have some of very small banana plants.

What I am looking for are good large sword suckers for those varieties above.

Why am I searching for those plants only in California? It is very difficult and expensive to bring plant in California without right paperwork. It is best to get plats from California.

I can buy or trade ,but most will be trade. I just drained out my banana plant project budget for those little banana plants I got. I have good amount of tropical/sub-tropical seedling fruit trees, vines ... Vietnamese Pink Guava , Cherimoya, Fruiting Cactus , Rambutan, Jack fruit , Sweet Passion Fruit, Jelly Vine, Moringa , Red Guamuchil ( Pithecellobium dulce ) Variegated Monsteria ... as well other flowering plants and the list go on...... for trading to enhance your food forest.

Of those you've listed, I think only Blue Java and Manzano have a chance in your location -- barely.

Also, how do you plan to breed hybrids? All the fruiting Bananas you've listed are self-sterile and sterile with respect to each other.

The project is simple ,but it take lot of time , labor and the cost . Some plants may died and if I can get some of them flowering as the same time, then I may cross pollination with each other. I know it is a challenge to grow banana in my area and go by the book of " self-sterile ". You will never know if you don't try. Expect the unexpected.

For 2017 I have Pisang Ceylon, Blue Java (the real one), Tall Namwah, Misi Luki, "Temple banana"from India, and SH 3640 available.
Unfortunately, I have no more space for plant trades but if interested, please PM me.

An hour in the library can save you years of field work. Time to read up on parentages of existing cultivars and how it was achieved.

User Gabe15 here is an expert on the subject.

I believe your Misi Luki is a Tall Namwa.

Yeah, it's toast there. I believe what you have is the "American Misi Luki" -- originally distributed by AgriStarts, proven out to be a Pisang Awak after I grew it out in Rancho Penasquitos -- and it was identified by many senior members here.

The true Misi Luki is indigenous to the Solomon Islands, purely tropical, and several writers report its demise in other near-tropic areas.

That's possible. Another variety to add to the "never ending" AgriStarts legacy of mixups like the Blue Java, Goldfinger and others then.

"I have three pups that were removed from the mother plants last week. One is Pisang Ceylon. Two are "banana from temple" - the mother plant was a pup from a banana growing outside a Temple in India. One of my customers brought it over in a suitcase. What variety it is we don't know yet - certainly we'll find out when it flowers."

I don't know of anyone growing it outside of USDA zone 12, or in the western hemisphere.

We have had good results from Dwarf Orinoco here in Sacramento, & the Blue Java has been doing almost as well.
For non-fruiting, oddly enough, Mekong Giants have been hanging in there somehow.

Misi Luki is just the Samoan name for ‘Mysore’. Seems to do fine in southern California as I recall seeing.
