Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Today I planted Jamaican Red, Orinoco, Manzano, Williams Hybrid, and Saba. The Orinoco has OVER 8 PUPS/EYES (that I could count!). These all came from MediaHound. He also sent me LOTS of extras!!!! Thank You SO MUCH Jarred!!!!
All of the pups/eyes. I counted 9. One had to be damaged to get a larger one off, another small pup had to be cut off with a larger one as well. Hope that one survives The large corm with pups under it! Planted the bottom of the pot with natural soil from my yard, topped off with Black Kow (manuer) and mixed with natural potting soil. Pups added to the 25 gal pot Topped off with more mixture of Black Kow and Potting Soil. ALL of my new plants planted. The front three on the bottom right are Dward PR bananas that were pups off of a pot I had bought at Rockledge Gardens. They were in the 10 gal pot together (already split) and I seperated them and gave each their own pot. |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Today I planted possibly two different varieties of unknown bananas. I bought them today from my friends at Rockledge Gardens. It was an over grown 25 gal. pot at a great deal for $30. There were two adult plants and three babies. When I got it home and split it, turns out that there was two seperate main rhizomes in the pot. So this might possibly be two different varieties. Each of the main rhizomes were 8-9 ft tall and had 1-2 small pups and one had a large one (3ft. corm). Guess we'll see what it is when the two larger ones fruit, hopefully they'll start flowering this fall!!! Knowing what the nursery regularely have for a selection, knowing they replanted two plants in the 25 gal pot, I think it might be an Ice Cream or a Williams. Would be awsome if it was one rhizome each in the pot!!!!! I'll take pictures of the planted bananas another day. My back yard is a mess due to some messy contractors that pressure washed old paint off of our patio walls and messed up some of my plants!!!!!!
I had also dug up a Dwarf Puerto Rican Banana that had died and replaced it with one of the new ones above, and to my suprise there were three babies at the bottom of the dead corm waiting to come up out of the gound. I repotted those into a pot until they could mature some more before seperating. Last edited by jpfloors : 03-11-2008 at 08:14 AM. |

I planted 4 eyes from poor Valery. The main stem rotted to the corm. The temps hit 42 degrees last fall and she declined from there. I scraped off most of the rot and left her in the sun to dry up. Then I planted her pieces up in 1 gallon black pots to warm in the sun. Can I get a prayer for Valery? |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Yesterday and today I started the germination process of sikkimensis, velutina, voilecea, ornata, balbisiana, and zebrina. I also planted seedlings of tomato, beets, radishs, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, squash, zuccini, red sweet corn, ocra, artichoke, and brussle sprouts.
I also planted seeds of Sunflowers: strawberry, cappuccino, bicentenary, chocolate, chianti, & moulin rouge; King Protea, St. Mary's artichoke (a thistle), venus fly trap, var. passion friut from around the world, ephedra sinica (yes, what ephedra is made from, it's an herb in china), and golden alexandria strawberries! Tomorrow I'll be planting Navajo Hopi Tea (an herb like chamomile), round leaf sundew (carnivorous), and pitcher plant (also carnivorous). These three I must put through stratification in the fridge. |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I've not been updating this thread with all I have been planting lately, but...
I've been doing a lot of rearranging lately. Today I planted 4 Dwarf Red corms cut from the mother plant on the other side of the yard. I cleared away some ficus hedge to make room for the bananas. Almost done getting rid of the row of ficus I've been working on. These ficus plants were about 15' tall, lots of work to dig the stumps up, but I have been doing a couple here and there for about a year now... 3 to go out of perhaps 30 that were there. I also planted two Saba corms today next to three others I did a couple weeks ago. Tomorrow I plan to plant two Green Dwarf Red corms as part of a relocation project as well. Also recently, I planted into the ground the following that were potted up: Variegated Namwah, Dwarf Namwah, Siam Black, Pisakng Klotek, Sweetheart, High Noon, Hua Moa, Dwarf Ladyfinger (Logees), and a Variegated Giant Indonesian (probably not "Variegated Silver Bluggoe" as it came in as). Lately, I've also been busy up to my usual separating pups from mother plants and lengthening rows.
