My first FHIA-23. About 65 lbs, 9 hands, 133 fingers. A year to flower and a week over 4 months to harvest. Hoping they're better than the 17s were.

An interesting thing about the GM and the FHIA bananas is that in local markets across the Americas they both sell at a discount to the Cavendish. In fact there is a song written about the FHIA bananas which states it's better to eat an FHIA banana than it is to starve. Here's another interesting thing about the GM and the Hawaiian export market. For half a century Hawaii was exporting the Cavendish but eventually couldn't compete with the cheaper GM coming out of the Caribbean. The Cavendish were costly to ship and needed more care than the thick skinned GM did. Even though they preferred the higher quality of the Cavendish they switched to GM in order to lower costs.

For me, in Pahokee, FL, the relevant citation is http://hortsci.ashspublications.org/...1/120.full.pdf
Homestead isn't exactly like my conditions but it is a lot closer than Puerto Rico. Quote:

Another bunch of Namwah (46 pounds). This one was harvested a little too late. The photo shows that many bananas were already split. Would have harvested earlier, but still have lots of last weeks harvest left and 5 more bunches to go before the temperature drops below 32F which is expected to happen next week. |

PR...
To each his own... I thought the GM were better than Cav.. You know what they say about opinions... My only concern as a home grower is flavor, though. (Size and texture to a smaller extent, but mainly flavor.) My favorite of all so far is one called Paggi... I just hope I can grow it here in central Florida. I find absolutely no info online about it.(One page with fruit pics, so I know I had the real deal.) I know it doesn't get too tall and tastes fantastic. I will update the wiki as I learn more about it. ![]()

A Maoli type, possibly Haikea. This was from an unnamed mat at Greenwell Garden in Kona. 13 months to flower, 4 month to harvest. About 65lbs. My shoes are size 10.

First Popoulu Ka'io. 9.5 months to fruit, 2.5 to harvest. Harvested a bit early to get to enjoy them before I travel in a week.

Would those also be called Hua Moa by any chance? I got some of those from Nick a while back and we really liked them out of hand while yellow... not black. They had a really good flavor and a creamy texture. I could do without the seedy center, though.
