varigated bananas

whats the easiest variegated banana to care for I really like the florida and the tanee but have heard they are not easy to keep is this true or are they like any other variety also whats the expected cost of these plants I have seen numbers all over the board

Only experience was with AeAe. Seemed trouble free, but the white portions tended to sunburn in out low humidity.

I settled with tanee. Mega hardy and for me grows just as well as any green form. Fruit are wild type which is the tanee downside.

I agree. Of mine TaNee and varigated dwarf namwa are the hardiest and best growers. That being said I’ve never lost one. Some seem to be more sensitive to moisture and cold. The only one i have trouble growing so far is the mailong namwa. It’s very pretty also. New leaves are yellow then turn green/white. Out of all i grow it is the ONLY one I’ve ever had trouble with.

You don't specify what type variegated.. zebrina (green/red variegated) is pretty easy from my experience. Probably quadrupled in size from 1.something feet to around 5 feet by the end of summer this year.. full sun.. no maintenance (planted in the ground in VA for the summer.. I dug it up in Nov. to winterize it indoors). The dude I bought it from said out of 4 of his in the ground, 2 of them survived a VA winter.

If you mean white variegated, from my understanding, Thai variegated ("Florida AeAe) is more hardy than Hawaii AeAe. Apparently, unless you're in the correct climate, Musa AeAe (Hawaii AeAe) is very fragile.

If I remember correctly, M. zebrina's variegations fade to almost nothing when the plants get large. I have grown zebrina while small, but I think that I have seen 12' zebrina in conservatories.

I have also grown the similarly variegated Musa Sumatrana X Gran Nain, which has wider leaves:

You're right.. my bad.. I think sometimes I forget how to read

And I also heard that about variegated banana plants.. about the colors fading on mature leaves (in full sun).. someone on one of my posts discussed that and said their AeAe plants did not have that happen. I read someplace else that theirs were losing color. I have heard answers from both sides of the coin, so maybe it varies plant by plant as well as by the species as a whole. Could also come down to the soil/water conditions or something

I have been leaning towards the florida but 140 dollars for one plant seems a bit much. I have all winter to do a little research on them since its already to cold here to ship them. the tanee is cool too I really don't care if it produces inedible bananas I wont one for the foliage and I live in northern ohio so getting fruit is almost impossible except for short cycles. and am still experimenting with them have a rajapuri that flowered somewhere around middle sept tried digging it up and potting to save them from the winter but that failed. bought a vc from one of the members here hope to have better luck with that next summer

Next spring, I'm sure a couple of forum members here will have pups available from variegated 'Nana varieties, including Variegated Florida, TaNee, 'AEAE', Variegated Dwarf Namwah, Variegated Mailong (Namwah), etc., for sure at much lower price!.....
