Variegated Banana from Seed

Are there any variegated bananas that will grow true from seed. I keep seeing Florida/AeAe and Tanee seed for sale and I keep reading they do not produce seed. Has anyone grown a variegated banana from seed.

I’m pretty sure you can’t? I heard somewhere that they’re like monstera, the variegated ones only come from propagation.

I breed monstera and bananas and both of them can produce variegated seedlings.

Here's a photo of a variegated banana seedling and if you look closely you can see that the seed is still attached.

Many varieties do not self-pollinate and seeds from cross-pollination will not grow true to type and will become new varieties.

There are many members here that are growing variegated bananas from seed, I know this because I sent them the seeds and they are sending me photos of the seedlings.

Edible banana cultivars that are pollinated can produce seeds.

Edible banana cultivars that are not pollinated don't produce seeds.

Think of a supermarket banana like a supermarket egg.

If a supermarket egg is fertilized it can produce a chick.

If a supermarket egg is not fertilized it doesn't produce a chick.

Here's some photos of three common edible banana cultivars that will easily produce seeds if there's a compatible pollen source within a quarter mile.

ABB Blue Java

AAB Manini A'ea'e

AA Veinte Cohol

The two most common edible banana cultivar seeds I see for sale on the internet are Blue Java and Manini A'ea'e seeds. But you should be cautious because even though those seeds are very easy to produce there's no way to be sure the seeds actually originated from those fruit. And even if they did, it's important to realize they will not produce Blue Java or Manini A'ea'e seedlings. Each seed, if it germinates will produce a new variety and you won't know if these new varieties are seedless or seeded until after they bear fruit.

FYI, many variegated plants are chimeras, in which case, the variegation trait cannot be passed to seed progeny. I don't know whether Ae Ae is a chimera or who would know. See

FYI, in seedlings, variegation is generally maternally derived by chloroplast transfer and is not a genetically inheritable trait. Anyone with experience breeding variegated bananas should easily recognized the maternal connection with the variegation. With that being said, it's very common for non variegated seedlings, produced by a variegated mother plant, to later produce variegated offshoots.

I don't know what that means. But, just in case it is relevant, a common example of a plant that passes variegation to seed progeny is pothos (Epipremnum aureum). An example of a chimera that doesn't pass the variagation trait to seed progeny is canna 'Pink Sunburst'.

variegated seeds still available? PM's are disabled it appears.

The Ae Ae is a chimera and variegation can be passed to seed progeny.

I usually make the seeds available during the wintertime when I'm less busy.

There's a lot of misinformation on this forum and it often begins with either "I heard" or "I know". "I know" is often used to be more assertive but many times when asked "How do you know?" the common reply is "I heard it somewhere".

The first time I germinated variegated monstera seeds all the seedlings were green but I learned that monstera seeds are polyembryonic.

If I had stopped there maybe I'd be saying " the variegated ones only come from propagation."

The second time I germinated variegated monstera seeds some seedlings were green, some were variegated, and some were completely white. I also learned that because they are polyembryonic, a single seed can produce a combination of the three.

The most important thing that I learned, which is also common in other variegated seeds, is that the seeds that produce all green seedlings are visually different than the other seeds.

It is often posted that direct sunlight will brown the white portion of the variegation but some growers are able to get the white and green areas to brown on plants that have never been in direct sunlight.

Direct sunlight is not the problem but it is often used as the excuse.

Here's a heavily variegated monstera that was grown in full direct tropical sunlight since day 1.

What about subsequent seeds from green seedlings like the ones I'm growing?

The original plant I found in the jungle was visually green and the seeds from it produced variegated seedlings.

You need to be careful with the male flowers because the pollen will produce seeds in some of the cultivars you're growing, the Blue Java is very compatible.
