Default Tips for Growing Siam Ruby

Hi all, I got my first Siam Ruby yesterday! I’ve heard they’re notoriously difficult to grow, especially in winter (I’m in zone 9a). Does anyone have general growing suggestions/overwintering suggestions?

i will watch this with interest.

it has a wonderful copper colored p-stem. very beautiful plant. i had one, a tc from florida hills, did very well in a pot growing to p-stem height of 18 inches or so.

it died shortly after i put in the ground, even threw out a couple of pups before dyeing. i think it was to much sun. but other bananas do well there.

if i were to do it again, i would buy 3 placing them in different parts of yard still in pots to see how they would do. but even then winter would probably take them out without some kind of cover and heat. i am in 9b.

where did you buy yours from.

Planting multiples in different locations is a great idea. I got mine form a local nursery called Good Earth.

With Tissue Culture I've had the best success transitioning them to full sun using a shade cloth.

I start them out as pots in the shade of course and when they are ready to go on the ground I will place a shade cloth until they get fully rooted and established and grow a lot more.

Simply transitioning TCs from pot to full sun in the ground is too much for them especially in my Texas heat. We've been in a heat wave since May getting close to 100F temps.

yes, i have 5 plants with 50% shade cloth on them now. none are tc's. lol

just ordered 100 dollars worth of shade cloth for a 20x20 canopy which i have. i am going to use it in the backyard mainly for some trees i have planted which are not doing so good in the sun. might just thro a banana under it to.

to answer gardenguy, when buying tc's i generally buy 2 or 3. you buy one and it dies after a month you have to start over again plus shipping.

I grow them in containers in zone 5/6.
For me this is a hot weather plant tolerating heat and sunlight.
It is one of the first plants along with bordelons to react to short days and cooler fall nights.
The plant will reward you with many pups.
My plants are overwintered indoors under led/cfl lamps.

You should do well with it.

I have Two tc that I got last year from Florida hill nursery, planted in ground. Technically I’m zone 8b, they survived the winter and each plant now has 3 pups sprouting up
