Thanks for the assist Hector! Not sure why Mudturkle couldn't see the photos. Maybe his bandwidth was cutting out or somethingand dropped the photos.

Patupi is growing stong. Its putting out a leaf about every 5-6 days. Leaves are getting a lot bigger too. Pretty good growth rate for not being established. A sword sucker off a strong mother plant must shoot up a like a rocket. Probably keep all pups trimmed off until September in order to push maximum growth on this plant through the summer months.

My bad, Akula. I was trying to reply to NativeRoots and ask him to post a picture of his Patupi because he got it from me. My Patupi has had a hard luck story. When I first got it I planted it at my house in 8B in a less-than-perfect spot. Then when winter was immenent I dug it up and potted it, placing it in my makeshift greenhouse (front porch closed in with plastic). Then I planted it at our place near Sargent TX (9B). And I sold him a pup from that. I think where I had it at Sargent was less than perfect also, because it hasn't fruited there yet either.

One month update.

Patupi puts out a leaf a week on average. It doesn't appear to be particularly faster than my Namwa or other plants. At this point the pstem is up to 45 inches in height. Pstem is starting to get that "substantial" look to it. 12 leaves out plus a cigar leaf showing. So far no pups. A 5' mark can be seen on the Namwa pstem on the left as a reference. The plant looks good although I accidently damaged a leaf positioning a ladder to check the height of the Namwa a couple days ago.

This guy will need to turn the turbos on if I am to get a flower this year.

Very cool! Mine hit the 20inch mark but is years from fruiting. It is doing similar growth speed as my other banana plants and it gets half as much water. The beautiful red pstem color seems to disappear if conditions aren't perfect.

I've noticed that the red pstem sorta comes and goes on mine also. At the moment the bottom 1/3 is pretty red but the upper 2/3 is primarily green except for a bit where the petioles join the pstem. I'll try to be more observant about the red color.

Mine is planted in a slightly raised bed so that might help with water drainage. I haven't fertilized or watered directly yet so he gets the run-off from the plants next to him (which are pretty close) that I do water deeply and fertilize plus whatever comes out of the sky.

Update: 60 inches of pstem and no pups so far. Two monhts of good growth weather left in my zone.

I’ve heard that if you keep only 5-6 leavess per pstem, they grow faster than if you allowed all leaves to grow. Just thought I’d add my two cents worth. :ha:

I've heard that too. We had a member who was aggressively trying that approach on his plantation in Thailand. As I recall his results were favorable. I'm mixed. Seems like the plant might produce bunches earlier but would be compromising bunch size. I might try that next year to see if it helps in my environment.

Wow, you really had a good growing season. My patupi plant is about half the size but it was looking like Che Guevara with all the pups it had made. Most of my banana plants produce pups in mid to late August and this one is no exception. I have since spruced it up and here's what it looks like. I only hope it looks good next spring!!

Your Patupi is looking really good. Perfect leaves and a thick pstem base. The corm should be really mature and packed with growth potential for
next year!

My plant is the size that can produce pups so looking forward to something peeking out of the ground this month. No chance for bananas this year so I think I will let the pups grow until the plant is effected by the temps and then separate and pot up for indoor growth over the cold months. I will leave the main plant in the ground.

Update: Patupi was up to 72 inches of height on September 28. A peeper finally broke through the soil. Averaging 12 inches of growth a month. The month of September has been unusually hot (min. 90F) and unusually dry (no precipitation). Plant has developed a lean trying to get to the sun from under the canopy. Looks about the same just a foot taller so no new pic.

Overnight lows are starting to hit the mid 50's so expecting the growth on this plant to hit the brakes. Its presntly at 84 inches or 7' of pstem although it doesn't look like it in the photo. I marked the 5' spot with a black marker line which can be seen when zoomed/expanded. Two pups.

I will pot up the pups soon and try to grow them over the winter shuttling them in and out of the house as temps allow.

My area had an early freeze the night of November 12th/13th with an overnight low of 29F. Banana plants did not like that! Patupi was protected a bit by the canopy and has a few leaves that are half green which is pretty good compared to my tall namwas that got destroyed.

The 2019 season is officially over for the Patupi which achieved a height of 87 inches without a flower during its first season. I have the main plant and two small pups. I haven't decided what to do with the pups...leave them in the field attached to the mother or separate, pot, and bring inside.

I will move the entire corn to a new spot that gets much better sun in the Spring and lay on the fertilizer heavy during the next growing season to get a maximum push of the plant.

Its up to Hector to get a flower on his Patupi and show the development of the bananas!
