Re: Patupi!!!
Looking good Donald! Your plants have done well this year! At least we are getting some rain, and not a hurricane.. a couple wet days should push the plants along nicely! Congrats!

The rain today was pretty good. We have had quite a bit of the wet stuff over the past couple weeks relative to the early part of the summer. Plants are growing great right now. I hope your Viente Cohol is doing well...I've got my eye on him! Haha. |

My patupi got pulled out of the ground during hurricane Sally on September 15th/16th and took a header directly into the yard. I replanted and it has recoved somewhat but no flower. September 17th 2020 layed out in the grass after a knockout punch by Sally: November 23, 2020 |

Sorry to hear that. Maybe next year!

Re: Patupi!!!
Final update!
This past Monday went out to cover up my banana trees in preparation of the expected overnight freeze and found a flag leaf on the Patupi! Extremely bad timing to get a flower started the day before a 31F overnight freeze. Boo hoo. Wrapped the pstem in burlap and strung C9 Christmas lights from top of the pstem down to the bottom and then covered the entire plant with 1.5 oz frost cloth. Long story short the plant made it through the freeze judging by the green leaves buttttttt......the top two feet of the pstem snapped off due to either the weight of the frost cloth, wind over the next two days or just general weakness in the plant. Summary I estimate the Patupi took nine months to produce a flag leaf at 7'8" of height. This plant is not as fast growing as commonly thought. In my zone vegetative growth needs to conclude within 7 months in order to get harvestable fruit. |
Re: Patupi!!!
Ouch, sorry to hear that! Lesson learned for the next flower. Timing is everything for sure.
I still have my patupi. I dug it up, cut off all leaves and brought it indoors. Mine is already over 2 years old. Very slow growth but I'd expect it will flower next summer if it lives till then.... Erik |

When I saw the notification I was like that would sure suck if it's flowering now. Sorry about the timing, that simply can't be helped I guess. Congrats on the flag leaf however! :woohoonaner: |
Re: Patupi!!!
Damn.. that Patupi has had some bad luck this year!! Well maybe next season!

Re: Patupi!!!
Sorry to hear about your patupi. At least now you know more about the flowering time line and can accordingly adjust for the next one.

Re: Patupi!!!
Patupi Year 3
Last season was a thriller with steady growth during the summer that put the plant in the target range for a flower only to be ripped out of the ground and slammed into the dirt face first by Hurricane Sally mid September. Despite the body blow, Patupi was able to suck it up and rally into the first winter freeze with two leaves and surprisingly threw out a flower! However it was not to be as the weight of the frost cloth after a heavy rain caused the weakened and thin top of the plant to snap off! Foiled again! This year we are starting the season at 36", a nice thick pstem and a total of 11 leaves (three just collapsed) vs. last year at this time at 28" and ten leaves. We have an eight inch better start! Who says, size doesn't matter? Yeah, baby! Last year the plant averaged 17" of growth per month between April and August so if we can keep to that pace, Patupi has an expected target of 104" by mid September. Last year the flower emerged at a height of 92". Hopefully this will be Lucky Year 3! No hurricanes! Everyone is more than welcome to post of pics and info about their Patupi in this thead. Post'em if you got'em! May 20, 2021 Patupi (A couple of excessively windy days this Spring have damaged the leaves) |
Re: Patupi!!!
Unless a storm or something happens, I bet you get a bunch this year, maybe within just a few months. Looks good.

Re: Patupi!!!
I'd cry. Still a gorgeous plant. I have one but it's just a tc. Hope it grows up to look like yours.
