Default My Banana Circle experiment
This is just 5 months, It's amazing how fast these plants grow! Keep in mind I planted these during Florida winter and my backyard is shaded by 2 huge trees

The Orinoco in top right is turning out to be a beautiful plant, and the Manzano in top left is my 3rd planting and outgrew the Orinoco and Gran Nain already

This is my first time growing bananas and it seems to be going pretty well, there is some very nice compost forming in there, I ended up emptying my worm bin in there a few months ago. My only concern is that I wonder if the worms are Ok with the washing machine soap?

Thats correct, kept the bananas and the compost moist during our winter, seems to have work out. However I just cut the flow off to the circle yesterday since it has started raining again.

07/12/2017 3 month update






Side view of the Gran Nain(left) and Orinoco(right), they are about 6 feet at the top petioles, taller than me (5'8")




This is a Plantain Circle I just started a couple of months ago, very interested to see future resusts also. 4 Common and 1 unknown plantains. There are some frogs living in there, eating all the flies, kinda cool.

Grand Nain it should be flowering/blooming approx 8 to 10 ft tall!....Really nice sword suckers on The Dwarf Orinoco......

Nice PR Common Dwarf Plantain circle!......They should be flowering/blooming around 8 to 10 ft tall also!....


All 'Nanas are looking very good Danny!.....

Thanks man, those are actually #4th and 5th suckers, I killed the first two while trying to take them out, I didn't cut them with enough roots, so they died eventually, I didn't like the direction they were growing, The 3rd I propagated somewhere else, succes .

07/21/2017 Added a different Goldfinger from a member. A little pale, it just came out of the box.




Compost from inside the Circle. The white pieces are banana roots that have grown into the compost. So far I'm very pleased with this form of composting, no energy required what so ever, other than making the initial circle.

08/17/2017 Funny enough my 3rd planting, Manzano, gave me my first flag! From TC at the end of November to now, about 9 months. Just under 10 Feet tall.

Well I was waiting to see what came back after Hurricane Irma clean up, everything seems to have died back to the corm with many pups now, except for one PR Dwarf Plantain which is not looking too good, the unknown plantain is pushing new leaves, the Orinoco finished is flower and the manzano which had flower a few weeks before the hurricane.

After a few days a lot of the leaves started to die back that's why I cut them back. I'll have to wait till next year to see results

Terrible to see your setback.

I read your earlier comment about frogs in your banana trees and I have noticed a bunch of green frogs in my patch this summer which are not common. Today I saw a green anole lizard for the first time. We use to have tons of green lizards in our area but they seemed to have died out and been replaced by the brown anole. Glad to see the green guy of my childhood!

Your bananas will come back too!

I'm sorry to see all your 'Nana losses!....A hard setback!....I'm glad that you are OK!....


I lost all my 'Nanas that they were flowering, blooming!....All gone!...A couple of months of setback!....Currently, all my 'Nana mats are recovering very well.....Most of them, are pushing out their new second leaf already!...


'Nanas are tough plants!....They will recover in no time!....
