![]() I'll edit some of these pictures out later but NC SlUsHy Ice mix KILLED/CUT-OFF power for thousands of people including me for 2 days(Fri.2AM-Sun.10AM)... No casualties over here everyone made it.
![]() I'm sure there are many that got it worse than me... SOOO many stoplights w/o power obviously blew-the-minds of senior citizens... I would polity wave and drive around, as they sit dumb-found pointing. ![]() ![]() ![]() Many trees fell in roads, pipes busted, transformers out, dangerous dangling power-lines, stores/gas stations CLOSED ![]() Used: 3 20-lb propane tanks, 9 gal. kerosene, 2 16-lb bags of ice. I got ready last minute the day before. Picked ups sticks/branches most of yesterday, More pictures around surrounding neighborhoods ![]() Bamboo mat ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Getting ready to make the night comfy ![]() Slush melting creating steam/fog/mist ![]() I haven't killed anymore nanas so far.... |

![]() It has gotten down to almost 0F inside my greenhouse, no heater used however the outdoor temperature has dipped as low as -9F.
Most of the stuff in the greenhouse still looks lively, and my greenhouse is a similar size to yours. Even though daytime highs have barely gotten over 20F lately, the greenhouse is still breaking 50F on most days due to the stronger sun lately. Even when lows get down around 0F, it still lingers in the upper teens so the climate has clearly been changed inside the greenhouse. I do keep water barrels, plastic on the greenhouse floor and compost all throughout the greenhouse which gives off CO2 and provides heat. Elevated CO2 concentrations should help increase photosynthesis of the plants inside the greenhouse. Here's the inside. ![]() Barrels should be completely melted in another week. They have about 50% ice now. ![]() It almost looks tropical in there despite it being completely white outside. ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() It has been an awful winter weather wise but the increasing sun declination is working against the cold. Today the sun declination at solar noon is - 4.33 and tomorrow -3.93 and before you know it will be 0.01 on March 20 solar noon and continued increasing until summer solstice. It is all down hill for old man winter and cold from here.

![]() That Ice storm was intense. For the whole day trees where cracking and falling - pines epically. I just sat outside watching, it was surreal. About Half of the homes are still without power in my area. Some roads are still blocked with trees.

![]() The epic winter has drawn to a close. Here are some pics from my place this winter along with my plants now as they await planting in 6-8 weeks.
![]() [IMG] ![]() [IMG] ![]() With the addition of a small electric heater I have managed to keep most of my bananas happy, while on a few nights the temp dropped to 32f which ultimately killed off a couple of CVs and really beat up my ensete glaucums. The ensete Maurellis are thriving as are the SDCs. Incredibly the Zebrina grown from seed almost in full on spring mode and requires fertilizer every week. Regards Harold |
