Cold indoor bananas at ~60° year round?

Howdy!

I am a total newbie when it comes to anything about banana's other than eating them. Actually, I am pretty new to that too considering there are so many varieties I have never tried. I was looking into growing fruit tree's indoors and discovered that people were growing banana tree's. I really like that idea but I don't know how viable it is in my situation so I am hoping for some advice.

I live in an apartment and it is generally around 61°-65° during the summer and can get to about 70°-72° in the winter. That sounds backwards I know but in the winter my neighbor's running the heat makes my apartment hot.

I was thinking that it would be awesome to grow a banana tree but I don't know if those temperatures are compatible with any banana varieties. I figure if the air temp isn't a problem I can move on from there. Any thoughts or opinions on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Bananas like it a little bit warmer, like in the mid to high 70s. I heard that 67 is the ideal nighttime temperature.

Well you can put it outside during the summer so it gets more heat. :^)

Yeah, seems a bit cold, but you could always give it a try anyway. As Abnshrek said, you can move them outdoors during the summer....they do better outdoors anyway. If you do keep them indoors, just be careful not to water too much....cold/indoors seems like a recipe for root rot to me.

And LOL @ 72 being 'hot'.....my place never seems to get below 75 degrees and below that I consider 'cold.'

You could totally keep them indoors in winter , and not too wet as I'm sure we've all learned the hard way in winter. ANd then keep them outside for summer, but be sure to give them filtered light for a few days or week until the get acclamated to sunlight as they will burn easily. Funny, I think it has been too hot here for bananas lately, my new leaves are burning on the edges even with lotsa water and humid conditions....Best of luck!
