Hello All.

It looks like I'm gonna be able to get some fruit from 2 of my Sabas this fall. I was wondering when I should try and harvest the fruit? Should it be yellow? This is my first time dealing with plantains, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I leave for 5 days in Bermuda in the morning, so it will be a few days before I can check the forum again. Thanks in advance

My first bunch took 13 months to ripen, but the rest have been about 8 months. It can be eaten as a desert banana when ripe.

was wondering if you have any pics of your saba??? in another post you were saying that it was so tall that you had to get on your roof to spray it..
i have seen plenty of post stating that it is one of the tallest fruiters available today... i realize you are near the gulf (it can get chilly)..i was just wondering how big one could grow outside of the tropics where most of the net pics displaying tall mature sabas are taken .

could you please post pics if its possible???

I've got sabas in two locations - at home in my backyard (just under a quarter of a mile from Lake Pontchartrain) and then in the yard of a friend's house. They were planted about the same time but mine get a little colder in the winter. This is their third year, at home, and to crown they are approx 8 feet. They are huge but are incredibly slow growing.

At my friend's house, which is less than a block off the lake, they are taller, around 12 feet to crown. One is blooming. 3 years for them as well. Don't know anything about them being plantains. There was another one blooming but it got destroyed in the July 3rd wind storm we had. Just...wrecked it. It had bloomed but not enough.

Thanks ron, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I am away from home at the moment, and not able to check the Forum as often. There are a couple of photos in my gallery but you have to look for them. They are the ones next to my house. I will post some new photos maybe this weekend, I took some new photos last week and they are pretty big.

We had a guy (driving by our house) stop and ask us what we were doing to our Banana plants, he he. We told him that it was a type of Banana which grow bigger than other Cultivars.

Anyway, hope this helps and I'll pm you when I get those photos posted.

My Saba took under 6 months to ripen - the plant blew down after 5.5 months and the bunch then started turning yellow within a few days so they must have been nearly there anyway. My Sabas, Tall Orinocos and Ice Creams are approximately the same size - approximately 12ft+ of stem before the leaves. My Sabas don't seem to get as big as some of the giants I have seen pictures of - different strains I guess!

i cut the stalk down, midway, it's too much of pain to get in reach of the fruit.

Yeah, it's gonna take a bucket truck to reach those babies. I remember getting on my 6 ft. ladder to get a better look, it was'nt even close, he he. I got my sabas from Chris. They are pretty healthy. There's some posted on the member's gallery. I'm not a good photographer though, but hope you enjoy.

I remember having Orinocos that got 25 feet tall to crown in New Orleans so I would think a Saba could get even taller since it's warmer there longer. No such luck in Mandeville, it's not warm enough long enough. A bit shorter.
