I have 14 bananas in pots.

Three have a weird discoloration.

The rest all look nice.

Anyway, there is a problem. Tell us about your watering, fertilizing, and the potting soil program for the plants. And, an 'over all' picture of the plant with pot; & a closeup of the plant base -top of the pot ... would help.

I have been fertilizing weekly using Fish fertilizer 5-1-1 and a liquid 0-10-10 bother mixed with water following the instructions.

I will try to make my pics small enough to upload. Took many attempts for that one pic.

I have 10 varieties in 25 gallon pots.

Some of their pups in 15 gallon pots.

The double mahoi pup has the same discoloration as it's parent in the 25 gallon.

The Fhia-1 in the 25 gallon pot also has the same discoloration too.

All 3 in newer leaves. I hope it's not one or 5 hose weird diseases. I didn't think southern California had any of them.

What instruction? ... I don't know what those are. Also, how much & how often are the plants watered? What is the potting soil used?

Yes, from the photos there appears to be a nutrient deficiency. BUT! ... that be may be cause by too much water; too much or too little fertilizer; too much elemental supplement; improper potting soil or Ph too high or too low. All causing root damage and. the inability of the roots to take-up needed nutrients.

Check the soil Ph and report.

my fisrt attempt to grow in pots was a disaster..........I made a drainage using expanded clay.....just like the Picture below......



It doesn´t work for me....the roots reach the bottom....where there´s no soil.........and this was the cause unsuficient nutrition..........at the bottom of a container there only moisture........no soil......

I remove the drainage from my pots...and the color comes again in my plants.......

The drainage layer simple move the 'pot water table' (wet zone) higher in the pot reducing available growing soil space for the roots.

Could be phosphorus too from the pictures from the Haifa group.

Looks like overwatering. I don't see any signs of deficiency.

I would check the roots and see if they are white and healthy! You may need to repot them. I use earth gro potting soil by scots mixed 50/50 with perlite! Perlite is the most important part. It will make the soil well draining and fluffy. Bananas love perlite!

Just to answer your questions.
Alaska fish fertilizer instructions on how many ounces per gallon of water.
The same with the Alaska bloom booster 0-10-10, followed the instructions.

Potting soil was a mixture of Kelloggs raised bed and potting soil and native soil.

Will try to check the Ph.

Repotting the bananas in the 25 gallon pots will be a chore since the oldest plants are over 7 ft.

The 15 gallon will be easy.

From the instructions I see using 4 Tbs per gallon applied every 3 to 4 weeks. If you are following the instructions, I believe you are not giving enough fertilizer. However, this does depend of the amount of mix given (gallons) to each plant & pot which you have not stated. ... Banana plants need 1 lbs of nitrogen & 1 1/2 lbs of potassium during the growing season. ... However, an estimate, applying a the quantity of mix need for nitrogen would be approx. 18 gal per plant every 3 weeks or 2 1/2 gal of concentrate for the season per plant. ... This would certainly lead to over watering container banana plants.

The Alaska Bloom booster, I can not find any info as to the micro elements this product includes. ... I suspect there are none or very little micros of which is in much need by banana plants.


I think the native soil in the potting mix is you bigger problem. The native soil is likely causing the mix to be too dense and retain too much water. ... Banana plant basically need FRESH water, not stagnate water from the bottom of the pot. For this reason potting mixes need to be very fast draining & light/airy.

A commercial potting soil mixed 50/50 with perlite would be much better.
