Yes that would work just defoliate them no trimming necessary. I would recomend takeing them out of the pot and just storing the corm with no dirt. Perhaps on a piece of carboard, that way you don't have to worrry about watering.

What is the difference between leaving them in the pot to overwinter and taking them out of it and knocking the dirt off?..Dont both go dorminant?

I was wondering the same thing Stumpy, I don't un-pot my Plumeria and it's done fine for 10+ years. Don't see why it wouldn't work but, I'm not sure it would either.

If there is no light I doubt there is very much differnce, however if you leave them in a garage that has light then you risk overstressing the plant, not to mention when you see it stuggling you may water it (too much). Lastly bare root plants are far easier to move than large pots.

Just my opinion but, if you leave them in the pot, make sure the soil is VERY dry or the roots will rot. It's easier to dry the roots by taking it out of pot & shaking dirt off.
When the plant is dormant, it's not taking up any water. So, any moisture in soil will just lay there & rot the roots.
