Basjoo pushing up already

I buried it a foot deep last fall and covered it with plastic. Pushing up!

YAY Thats awesome! I just fertilized everything then we got two days of rain I'm excited to see what's going on out there now! I worked 16 hrs last 4 days so haven't gotten to look its been dark when I get home

Wow congrats! I think mine are dead. They were really weak during the season, but My Thai Black grew back so maybe my basjoo will too!
The warm weather sure is helping plants along this year!

This WI winter has been amazing, hasn't it!? My basjoos (and maurelii) are still in the basement....I plan on leaving the basjoos out next winter. But they've been growing like a weed all winter, so hopefully will have a good start!

My basjoos started pushing up from the ground too. Haven't cut down the p-stems to see if growth there too. What a winter!

Heres mine already....Zone 6 Central Ohio. I got about 2.5-3 foot to work with already. They are gonna get huge this year!

Ok ok.....So we all have bananas coming up..I have about 12 coming up so far and i am as happy as you all but what if and im sure we will have a hard freez and or snow????
Do we recover or just let what happens happen??

Kat, we are planting the t/c basjoos finally. They sure grow fast. All of them are root bound so we had too remove some of the roots. Still have a multitude to put in the ground and have found a good method. Got a tiller at a yard sale and it makes a nice whole fast. Not as deep as we would like but with the sand here I don't think there will be any problem. Have to repot all of the maurelii as they also are getting root bound. How is the nursery doing? Did you lose anything over the winter? Got to get up there and check out your progress.

that looks great it amazing what these can survive! I planted mine late 2010 aug. I would have planted it deeper but i was a real amature back then. so last fall around early Nov I added a couple inches of soil I dug it back so show the original ground level after planting. and you can see how much P-stem I was able to save.

Cut the p-stems today, and holy sh*t. One had a leaf coming out at over 6 ft.! As a matter of fact, I cut the first one and accidentally cut into the new leaf stalk. Man, give me these zone 8b winters any time!!

some of mine are starting to sprout too. And that's a couple of them that I looked at so far by the side door. They are planted a foot deep and I didn't mulch them at all.
They shouldn't be up until May usually.

Its been growing like crazy...now they are sayin we have a frost warning tomorrow. Any suggestions on what to do to protect it? Here it is now....

They're forecasting 21 F for Monday night and 30 F Tuesday night here in the Boston area. The ones I have in pots, I will bring in but I think I might build something from pvc or just put some plastic (drop cloth)over the one I replanted and put an electric heater under the plastic. I just called the nursery about my peach trees which are about to open their flowers. They said they would be fine but I don't know. I'd like to have peaches this year.

I'm just putting the same bags of leaves I had around them all winter back into place an covering with a tarp. If it stays cloudy I'll leave it in place for Tuesday and Tuesday night. If it gets too sunny might uncover for the day. Don't want to cook them.

I got busy last weekend and divided my DC and planted half in the ground, the other half back in the pot. Figure it will be ok under a tarp as well, since I really don't have a choice now. I guess I could pull it back out of the ground and bring it in for the night, but really don't want to shock the roots that much.

I have 3 pseudostems in bloom right now. It's kinda cool to get fruit on these.

The mother corm didnt survive but the pups are doing great, Infact I have already remove 3 and relocated them into other parts of the yard and they are taking off as well.
