Non - profit humanitarian worker
My permanent residence is British Colombia Canada but am working with a group of refugee farm families in the San Onofre area of Colombia.
I am very much interested in Banana and Plantain production especially plants cultivated using Stem Cell Technology. |

If it was myself I would ignore stem cell plants and go with stand tissue culture plants. Never heard of stem cell plants. Explore the local areas and collect as much disease free material as you can. Grow what is already there first. Bryce, thanks for your input, I have searched locally and have found no suitable stock, however there are large plantations on the road from Cartagena to San Onofre, I have not contacted any of these large plantations.
My problem I need at least Six Thousand Plants to give each family a reasonable size plantation. I am working with nearly One Thousand Acres. nice sloping hillsides. lovely country side. I would very much like to see at least Three Thousand plants in the ground by September / October 2018 rainy season. Fraser. |

I myself have been giving plants to the poor. Last year I handed out about 100 and this year probably less. Next year I plan on at least 300. Just for my small numbers took a lot of work traveling and ordering. If you are able to get at least one thousand plants in the ground this year they will multiply pretty fast and you could have as many as 6000 or more by this time next year. Especially in Colombia. If in the meantime you find a couple plants here and there I would get them. Here is our local company that does cultures. Find out if you can order from them and find out how to get them shipped down. FHIA varieties are probably going to be the best bet IMO. I see Mona Lisa and GoldFinger on their list and those should be pretty good down there. https://www.agristarts.com/index.cfm...D/53/index.htm. I am sure you will want the most disease resistant. I would be sure to focus on that and find what local diseases are there and the possibility of future introductions. No point in planting thousands of bananas and having them dead in a couple years.
