Hello Jose, welcome aboard.
Check the member map, click your link, wait for all the pins to load for a minute or two, and then you'll see there's a few other members near you within easy driving distance. I would check each's profile and pop them a message over PM, you might get some great advice from the locals there and maybe can arrange for some plants as well.

Welcome Jose,

I don't live too far from you but I'm inexperienced myself. Dig into the forum especially the Cold Hardy Forum. When you see terms that interest you run them in the search engine and you will be overwhelmed with info. I sent you a PM.

VERY IMPORTANT RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one will send you an answer if you don't post a question.

We all knew less than nothing when we started. I now know a little bit more than nothing and I learned it all here by reading and asking.

POST POST POST

Welcome Jose, I live in Gulf Shores, al.
When I started with bananas I was looking for the taller ones to give my yard a jungle look. Most local ones are Orinoco. I have recently purchased bananas that are shorter in height (Raja Puri & Dwarf Cavendish) which I'm hoping will produce fruit earlier since you can winterize them easier than the taller bananas when the cold weather comes thus giving them a head start in spring. Hope this helps.

Hydroid - thanks for the tip - I know Gulf shores well - grew up in P'cola and spent lots of time on Perdido Bay and Orange Beach. - Still have family in Lillian and Foley
Darkman from P'Cola has been very helpful also.

I was leaning toward full size - for no particular reason except they are bigger - you're point about winterizing (have to study up on that) and early production is a good one. Most important, I want to be able to eat home grown bananas.
So far members have suggested Dwarf Orinoco, Double-Maohi?, and Goldfinger -I'll now be looking up Raja Puri & Dwarf Cavendish also.
Still debating at this point about what I want to try first.
For those on Gulf Coast - if you had to choose only two varieties most likely to do well - what would they be?

Hey Jose
Most of my Bananas are of the taller cultivar. The tallest being Saba, althought they are a plantain and I had 2 bunches that did'nt have enough time to ripen last year. They are quite spectacular to see. If you are over this way just pm me and drop by for a dig, I have Goldfinger, Orinoco, Ice Cream. Darkman and his wife dropped by last month and he dug a few naners. These all do well but are slow to fruit when we have such cold winters like the past one because I had to cut them down to the ground. If we get a mild winter and no storms I will have a bunch of fruit. My Raja Puri did well in the cold because it was short enough to put garbage bags filled with leaves around the psudostem all the way to the main leaves. When I removed the bags in spring the stem was still nice and green, it has pupped all summer. Thanks
Bo

Welcome from Bermuda! I joined this forum with two types of bananas and now have five. It is a great site and great way to meet others. Hydroid came to visit me while he was working in Bermuda. Enjoy! James.
